PORTLAND, Ore. --- Kaila Cameli scored twice and Micaela Capelle notched the game-winner as the No. 13 Portland Pilots picked up their fifth shutout of the year with a 3-0 win over the Seattle Redhawks on Friday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots run their unbeaten streak to six games and they improve their record to 6-1-1.
Seattle drops to 4-5-0.
Capelle began the scoring for Portland when she took a pass from Amanda Frisbie, shook free of a couple of defenders and calmly finished past Seattle goalkeeper Brianna Smallidge in the 19th minute. It’s the third goal this season for Capelle, who also registered what would prove to be her second game-winner of the fall.
The Pilots did well during the game’s first 45 minutes to contain the game within their offensive half of the field. Seattle did, however, nearly tie the game in the 25th minute when Stephanie Verdoia rattled the crossbar with a shot from 22 yards out.
Portland continued to control the run of play in the second stanza and would eventually push the advantage to two goals when Cameli tallied her first in the 79th minute. Frisbie again assisted after gaining possession and out-racing two defenders to the end line. The junior from McKinney, Texas, sent a cross to the middle of the box, where Cameli took a touch before slotting one past Smallidge.
Then in the 86th minute, it was Capelle who created an opportunity for Cameli. This time the junior forward easily finished into the right corner of the net for her first multi-goal game of 2012.
Cameli now has five goals on the season, which ranks second on the team to Frisbie’s six, and she has goals in back-to-back games. Cameli nearly scored a third, but she was denied by Smallidge in a one-v-one opportunity.
Portland sophomore goalkeeper Nichole Downing made two saves on the night to claim her third shutout this season. Downing has registered a blank sheet in all three games she has started to maintain a perfect goals against average of 0.00.
Smallidge finished with four saves, while the Pilots posted a 16-10 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in shots on-goal.
Next up for the Pilots is a visit from Denver on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers, who are coming off a home-win against TCU, enter Sunday’s contest with a 7-1-2 overall record. Kickoff at Merlo Field is set for 1 p.m.
