PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland’s Micaela Capelle scored in the 67th minute, but Cal State Northridge equalized moments later on an own goal as the No. 22 Pilots and Matadors played to a 1-1 draw in a non-conference women’s soccer match on Thursday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots now sit at 6-2-2 on the season, while the Matadors move to 3-3-4.
Both teams had a chance at the game-winner during the first overtime as CSUN’s Melissa Fernandez pushed a shot wide, and UP’s Kaila Cameli had her shot saved by Cynthia Jacobo, the Matador goalkeeper. Cameli briefly created a one-v-one opportunity with Jacobo, but her shot from just inside the top of the box was denied in the 96th minute.
The Pilots would then attempt the only shot of the second overtime.
The Pilots held a slim 15-13 edge in overall shots, and it was Capelle who gave the Pilots a 1-nil lead with her fourth goal of the year. After 66 minutes of scoreless soccer, Amanda Frisbie was able to get around the backline, reach the endline and send in a perfect cross to Capelle. The junior forward then buried a shot into the right corner of the net from 12 yards out.
The lead was short-lived as the Matadors equalized two minutes later, courtesy a Portland own-goal. UP junior keeper Erin Dees made a nice save on the initial shot by Marisa Miller, but the attempted Portland clearance ended up in the back of the net.
Dees finished with four saves on the night, while Jacobo countered with two.
The Pilots next return to action on Sunday, Oct. 7 when they host the San Diego State Aztecs at Merlo Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., and the Pilots will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their 2002 National Championship. Members from that national championship team will be on hand for a half-time ceremony, as well as a post-game autograph zone.
