PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland’s Rebekah Kurle scored her first career goal, Notre Dame’s Sammy Scofield equalized and the No. 18 Pilots and No. 21 Fighting Irish followed with 70 minutes of scoreless soccer as the non-conference match ended in a 1-1 draw in front of a capacity crowd of 4,932 fans at Merlo Field. It’s the second straight sellout crowd at Merlo Field for the Pilots, who now sit at 4-1-1 on the year.
The Pilots had several quality looks during the second half, but ultimately were unable to capitalize. Amanda Frisbie missed wide on a penalty shot in the 56th minute, and Notre Dame goalkeeper Elyse Hight made a handful of clutch saves to deny the Pilots.
In the 75th minute, Kaila Cameli was able to split a pair of defenders before trying a chip shot over Hight. But the keeper, who had gone to the ground to challenge the shot, was somehow able to get a hand on the shot, knocking it away.
Neither team seriously threatened to score during either of the 10-minute overtimes, as the Pilots and Irish combined for just three shots during the extra time.
Kurle’s goal came on a rebound after the Irish were unable to clear the loose ball out of the six-yard box. Ellen Parker attempted a shot which was deflected, where Kurle was able to finish into the top shelf for the 1-0 lead.
Nine minutes later, the Irish tied the score when Anna Gilbertson sent a troublesome ball into the area on a corner kick. Scofield rose above the crowd and finished with a firm header into the back of the net.
The Irish (3-2-1) also had a chance to take a lead during the second half when Lauren Bohaboy rattled the crossbar on a free kick from 24 yards out.
The Pilots finished with a slight 17-16 edge in overall shots, while posting a sizable 10-3 advantage in shots on-goal. UP also had eight corner kicks, while Notre Dame had six.
Junior Portland goalkeeper Erin Dees was only forced to make two saves on the night, while Hight finished with eight stops.
Next up for the Pilots is a trip to Los Angeles, Calif., where they’ll face the Southern California Trojans next Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
