PORTLAND, Ore. --- Ellen Parker scored the game-winner, Noelle La Prevotte added the insurance goal and goalkeeper Erin Dees made four saves as the No. 6 Portland Pilots won their 10th straight match with a 2-0 shutout over the San Diego Toreros on Thursday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots improve to 13-1-1 on the season and to 5-0-0 in the West Coast Conference.
The 10-game winning streak is the longest for Portland since also winning 10 straight during the 2010 season.
After the Pilots controlled possession for most of the first half, Parker scored her fourth goal of the year in the 36th minute. On the play, Danica Evans was able to somehow get a touch on the ball inside the 18, sending a short pass to Emily Sippel, whose initial shot was blocked. The ball then fell to the feet of Parker, who calmly finished to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead at the half.
After the break, the Pilots continued their habit of scoring goals early in the second half when La Prevotte finished a on a 1-v-1 for her team-best third goal during conference play. Evans began the play by sending a ball out wide to Parkes Kendrick, who deftly one-touched a pass ahead to La Prevotte. The sophomore forward did the rest, burying a shot past USD keeper Michelle Craft and inside the left corner of the net.
La Prevotte's goal came just 1:26 into the second half and it's Portland's fifth goal this season to come within the first five minutes of the second half.
Dees and the Pilots would easily hold on from there to record their seventh shutout on the year and third against league foes. The only two goals allowed by Portland against WCC opponents this season came on a PK at Pepperdine and on an own-goal against Gonzaga.
The Pilots finished with an 11-7 edge in shots as most of the Toreros' (9-7-0, 2-3-0 WCC) attempts were from outside the 18-yard box and came late with San Diego trying to battle back from a two-goal deficit.
Dees was never seriously challenged en route to her 16th career shutout.
Seven of Portland's 11 shots were on-target and Craft finished with five saves for the Toreros. She made an impressive save on a shot from Sippel that was driven from about 25 yards out in the 52nd minute. Craft somehow got a touch on it, sending it high of the cross bar.
Next up for the Pilots is a visit by No. 24 BYU for a 7 p.m. WCC match on Saturday night at Merlo Field. The Cougars sit at 10-4-1 on the year and 4-1-0 in the WCC after winning 1-0 at Gonzaga on Thursday.
