PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women's basketball team plays a pair of road games this week against Pac-12 opponents, beginning with a match-up with the Oregon Ducks tonight at 7 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena. The Pilots then head to Seattle, Wash., to face the Washington Huskies on Friday at 12 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
The Pilots (1-0) are fresh off a come-from-behind 68-65 win over the Eastern Washington Eagles last Friday at the Chiles Center. Portland used a late 18-6 run to secure the win, which included seven late clutch points from junior Cassandra Brown. Brown's lay-up with 19 seconds remaining gave the Pilots the lead, and her lay-up moments later after a Portland steal sealed the win.
Brown, who missed all of last year while recovering from off-season surgery, led the way with a game-high 17 points. Junior Cassandra Thompson had a double-double, registering 13 points and 12 rebounds, to help the Pilots claim a decisive 41-30 edge on the glass.
Senior Alexis Byrd, who came up with that late steal, and junior Jasmine Wooton also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Oregon (1-0) is also coming off a season-opening win after exploding for a 131-91 victory over Cal State Bakersfield last week in Eugene. The Ducks snapped the Pac-12 and school records for points (131) and made three-pointers (20) in the win.
Katelyn Loper led all Ducks with a game-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting from three-point range. Jillian Alleyne recorded a double-double with 24 points on 16 rebounds and Chrishae Rowe was the third Duck to score 20 points with 27.
The Pilots won easily over the Ducks last season, 68-49 at the Chiles Center, but Oregon still claims a 24-5 advantage in the all-time series. Kari Luttinen scored 22 points during last year's win. Portland is 0-16 all-time against the Ducks in Eugene.
