PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland junior forward Micaela Capelle notched two goals and the Pilots scored all four goals in the second half en route to a 4-0 shutout win over the Canadian U-20 Women’s National Team in an exhibition match played on Friday night at Merlo Field. Capelle also had an assist, while Ellen Parker and Kaila Cameli also scored.
After a scoreless first half, Capelle opened the scoring with a goal in the 51st minute. Cameli found Capelle with a through ball near the top of the box, forcing Canadian keeper Maryse Bard-Martel to come off her line to challenge. Capelle took a touch around Bard-Martel and finished from six yards out.
Then in the 64th minute it was Parker who gave the Pilots a 2-0 lead. Capelle was able to reach the endline left of the goal before sending a pass to an unmarked Parker, who easily tapped a shot into the back of the net.
Cameli and Capelle then added goals in the 73rd and 84th minutes, respectively, to put the game out of reach. Cameli's goal came on a nice pass from Parker, who was able to make it around the corner of the backline right of the goal. Cameli re-directed a low cross just underneath Bard-Martel.
Capelle’s second goal of the night was unassisted and came from a difficult angle right of the right post.
Portland starting goalkeeper Erin Dees made one save in the first half, while Nichole Downing took over at the break and made three stops to preserve the shutout.
Canada was forced to make a team save to keep the game scoreless in the first half, and Capelle hit the crossbar with a header in the 30th minute.
The Pilots are next set to host the Portland Thorns FC in another exhibition match on Saturday, March 30, at 7 p.m. at Merlo Field. The game will be a free, ticketless event and open to the public with a suggested donation at the door to benefit the Providence Heart and Vascular Institute’s Play Smart Young Heart Screening program.
