PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 5 Oregon State Beavers broke a tie game with a run in the top of the fifth inning before adding three insurance runs in the sixth to claim a 5-1 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played in front of a capacity crowd at Joe Etzel Field on Wednesday. Oregon State’s go-ahead run in the fifth came on a well executed suicide squeeze play.
The Pilots drop their second straight game to a top-10 opponent in as many days to fall to 13-24 on the year. The Beavers improve to 29-6.
After the Beavers jumped ahead with a run in the top of the third, the Pilots immediately responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Brian Frattali led off with a single before working his way around to third base. Nick Armenta then came through with a solid two-out single to right field that easily allowed Frattali to trot home with the tying run.
The game would remain tied until the fifth when OSU’s Max Gordon laid down the RBI sacrifice bunt. In the sixth, Danny Hayes hit a double deep off the wall in center field, one of his four hits on the day, that scored two. Andy Peterson followed with an RBI single to hand the Beavers a 5-1 lead.
The Pilots never seriously threatened to score from there.
Oregon State starting pitcher Dan Child (4-1) needed just 72 pitches in 8.0 innings to secure the win. He allowed Portland’s one run on four hits. He struck out six and didn’t issue a walk. Cole Brocker pitched the ninth inning, allowing just a two-out single to Cody Lenahan.
Portland freshman starter Zach Torson (0-5) gave the Pilots 4.0 solid innings before making way for the bullpen. He was charged with two of OSU’s runs and he surrendered four hits. The right-hander fanned five and only walked one.
Portland reliever J.R. Bunda allowed three runs in, while Brandon Snyder, Jackson Lockwood and Jeremy Burright combined for 3.1 scoreless innings.
Oregon State out-hit the Pilots 9-5 and both teams committed an error. Lenahan had two of Portland’s five hits.
The 1,007 fans in attendance gave Portland its first sold out game at Joe Etzel Field since hosting the Beavers before a capacity crowd on April 24, 2007.
The Pilots next travel to Moraga, Calif., for a three-game West Coast Conference series against the Saint Mary’s Gaels this weekend. Friday’s opener is set for 3 p.m. at Louis Guisto Field, while first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
