Portland Records Elite APR Numbers
NCAA Release I APR Database I APR Head Coach Database
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The complete NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) were released on Tuesday and the University of Portland is once again among the national elite. All 15 Portland programs rated high on the scale and no teams are nearing any penalties. Among the four Division I universities in the state of Oregon, Portland posted the highest APR in 14 of the 15 sports in which it competes. Portland also recorded the highest APR in six West Coast Conference sponsored sports.
Last week the NCAA announced Public Recognition Awards for programs scoring in the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports. This week the full APR data has been released for every Division I program. Portland had
seven teams recognized with Public Recognition Awards last week – men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor and outdoor track, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track, and women’s volleyball.
“The stability of our athletic programs in terms of academic progress is excellent,” Portland Athletic Director Scott Leykam said. “It is no surprise that with the quality of coaches on staff here at the University of Portland and the caliber of student-athletes in which we recruit that we are at or near the top of these ratings across all sports. Portland has always held academic integrity and graduating student-athletes in the highest regard, and this data supports that notion. We will continue to expect excellence both in the classroom and in athletic competition.”
Four Pilot programs recorded perfect 1,000 multi-year APR scorers: men’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track, women’s cross country and volleyball. A total of 10 programs either increased or maintained their multi-year APR score from the previous year.
Each Division I team calculates its APR annually based on the eligibility and retention of scholarship student-athletes. Rates are based on the past four years of performance. In order to compete in the 2013-14 postseason,
teams must achieve a 900 multi-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years. The same standard was in place for the 2012-13 academic year. This standard will increase to a multi-year 930, which predicts to a Graduation Success Rate of approximately 50 percent, or a 940 two-year average APR for the 2014-15 postseason.
