Pilots Start Strong at PNW IntercollegiatePNW Intercollegiate DrawsKIRKLAND, Wash. --- The Portland men's tennis team opened with strong results on the first day of the PNW Intercollegiate, held at the Central Park Tennis Club. The Pilots went 6-1 in doubles action and 7-2 in singles play on Friday.
In Flight 1 doubles play, Dierauf and deLaubenfels cruised to wins in their opening two matches and will face the top-seeded duo of Maasland/Swaysland of Oregon in the semifinals on Saturday. Portland's Kent Andreasen and Mathieu Garcia also advanced to the Flight 1 semifinals and will face Washington's Farkas/Watanabe in the bottom of the bracket.
In Flight 2 doubles, freshmen Jamie Fisher and Pierre Garcia won their quarterfinals matchup and will take on Gonzaga's Varas/Chip on Saturday.
"We had a great start to the weekend today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Today was our high point of the fall for doubles. Some of the concepts our young guys have been struggling with started to gel. We have high hopes for Reid deLaubenfels and Steffen Dierauf and they came through nicely today with a couple of good wins."
Portland will be represented in five of the six singles flights on Saturday. Dierauf, playing in just his second tournament this fall, defeated Boise State's Hiewko in straight sets.
"Steffen played a very good singles match against a good player from Boise State and is gaining match toughness by marching on in the draw," Gross noted. "He showed some very good form today. Winning tournaments in the fall was never the goal for Steffen. The big thing was that he was in need of match play. The only down side to losing for Steffen in a tournament like this is that he doesn't get to play another match. I am confident that he is going to be right where we need him to be going into conference play in the spring."
Mathieu Garcia pulled out a three set win over Seattle's Stormans in Flight 3, while Pierre Garcia cruised past Cochrane of Portland State in straight sets in Flight 4. Freshman Jared Madison eased past Berkabile of Seattle in Flight 5. Freshman Dominique Gilli won two matches to reach the semifinals of Flight 6 along with fellow frosh Jamie Fisher, who knocked off Alderson of Seattle in three sets.
"The other positive today was we had two guys who lost first sets and came back to win the final two. That is character that we saw a lot from the graduating group from last year and it was great to see it from two of our freshmen today."
Joining the Pilots in the PNW Intercollegiate field is Washington, Oregon, Gonzaga, Boise State, Portland State, Seattle U and Eastern Washington. The tournament will continue through Sunday and daily results will be posted on PortlandPilots.com.
