STOCKTON, Calif. – Nikola Keremedchiev won his opening round singles match and partnered with Cade Fernando to reach the doubles quarterfinals to highlight Portland's efforts Friday at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
 
Keremedchiev defeated Oregon's Sam Olszakowski 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to advance to the Round of 32 where he will face Nico Rating of host Pacific Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Portland had two doubles teams advance in the morning session on Friday. Keremedchiev and Fernando defeated Nicholas Reeves and James Hutchinson of Gonzaga 8-5 in a Round of 32 match. The duo now advances to the quarterfinals on Sunday after their Round of 16 opponents from Oregon withdrew.

Stefan Skobelev and Tom Garcia outlasted Perry Di Giulio and Rithvik Katpelly of UC Davis by an 8-7 margin to move on. They will face the third seeded Alex Chang and Alexander Razeghi of Stanford Saturday morning.

The regional events serve as qualifying tournaments for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from each of the 13 regions will qualify for the corresponding NCAA individual championship. The event continues with the championship matches scheduled for Tuesday, October. 21.

Admission is free for fans wishing to attend throughout the week and some matches will be streamed live.
