SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland men's tennis players Nikola Keremedchiev and Cade Fernando earned West Coast Conference recognition, the league office announced on Tuesday. Keremedchiev garnered All-WCC Second Team honors in singles and Fernando was honorable mention. The duo also picked up honorable mention recognition in doubles.
Keremedchiev, a senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, finished the regular season 16-8 overall in singles and 10-5 at the No. 1 singles position in dual matches. He was 3-0 against WCC opponents in dual matches.
Fernando, a junior from West Linn, Ore., played both No. 1 and No. 2 singles and recorded 19 overall wins. He was 12-6 in dual singles and 3-3 in league action.
The tandem was one of the best doubles teams in the league after posting a 19-5 overall record this season. They went 12-4 in dual doubles matches at No. 1, including a 3-1 mark in league competition.
The Pilots qualified for the WCC Championships for the fifth consecutive season under head coach Aaron Gross.
Portland is the No. 5 seed and faces fourth-seeded and No. 55-ranked LMU on Thursday at 9 a.m. in the opening round of the WCC Championships being held at Green Valley Country Club. The winner moves on to Friday's semifinals with the championship match on Saturday. Visit the
