THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots play their final two non-conference games of the season when they travel to Eastern Washington and Boise State.
• First the Pilots will be in Cheney, Wash., to face the Eastern Washington Eagles at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night.
• Portland will then head to Boise, Idaho, for a 1 p.m. (Pacific) game on Sunday.
LAST WEEK • The Pilots split a pair of home games at the Chiles Center, defeating the Portland State Vikings 91-63 on Friday night before succumbing to the Montana Griz 69-55 on Sunday.
• Cassandra Brown joined Portland's 1,000 career point club with 20 first-half points against the Vikings; she'd finish with 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting and the Pilots shot 50.8 percent for the game.
• On Sunday, the Pilots led by five at the break before Montana embarked on a lengthy second-half run to secure the win; Kari Luttinen scored a team-high 16 points for the Pilots, while Brown grabbed a season-best 11 boards.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Senior Cassandra Brown became the second Pilot to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone with 26 points during the win over Portland State; Brown joins fellow senior Kari Luttinen, who scored her 1,000th career point during a win against Utah on Nov. 29.
• Luttinen enters the weekend with 1,052 career points, which ranks 18th all-time in program history, while Brown currently has 1,014 points.
• Senior Jasmine Wooton (876 points) is also poised to join the 1,000 point club.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team (Nov. 28-29) after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Portland's win over Utah (Nov. 29) she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Brown leads the WCC in three-point shooting (.451, 23-for-51).
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Jasmine Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team and the Pilots were tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.
• Wooton landed All-WCC Honorable Mention as a junior, averaging 13.1 points and 4.3 assists; last season Wooton exploded for a career-high 36 points during a 73-65 win at Pacific on Dec. 28; it's the most points scored by a Pilot since Martha Sheldon also scored 36 in 1991.
• Last season's 72-51 win over No. 24 San Diego on Jan. 8 was Portland's first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 6, 2003, when the Pilots topped No. 20 Oregon 76-58 at the Chiles Center.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • Eastern Washington sits at 4-4 after a road loss at Boise State last week; the Eagles also claim a one-point road loss at Gonzaga; guards Lexie Nelson (17.6 ppg) and Hayley Hodgins (17.3 ppg) lead the team in scoring.
• Boise State has won two straight and is 7-3 on the year; senior wing Deanna Weaver leads a balanced scoring attack with a team-best points per game mark of 14.0.
AMONG THE CONFERENCE ELITE • Senior Cassandra Brown is the most accurate three-point shooter in the WCC, entering the weekend with a percentage of .451 (23-for-51) from behind the arc; she's also fourth in three-pointers made (23) and is fifth in scoring (16.8 ppg) and free throw percentage (.857).
• Freshman Sara Zaragoza ranks second in the conference in blocked shots (1.8 bpg) and senior Jasmine Wooton is fourth in assists (3.6 apg).
1,000x3 • Portland already has two players to score career point No. 1,000 this season and a third is right on the verge of joining the club.
• During Portland's win over Utah on Nov. 29, senior guard Kari Luttinen became the 22nd player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points; she currently has 1,052 career points, which ranks 18th all-time at UP, and she's averaging an impressive 10.7 points per game in four years with the Pilots.
• Senior Cassandra Brown (1,014 points) joined Luttinen last weekend when she dropped 26 points on the Portland State Vikings.
• A third senior, Jasmine Wooton (876), should also reach the historic milestone this season.
• Portland has never had three players score their 1,000th career point in the same season in the 37+ years of the program's existence.
• Two players have scored career point No. 1,000 in the same season a handful of times, most recently during the 2011-12 season when Natalie Day and ReZina TecleMariam accomplished the feat.
