THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots open play in the West Coast Conference with a pair of home games at the Chiles Center.
• First on Saturday, the first-place San Diego Toreros visit for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
• The Brigham Young Cougars then come to The Bluff for a 7 p.m. game on Monday night.
LAST WEEK • The Pilots dropped their final two non-conference games on the road.
• On Wednesday, Dec. 17, the Eastern Washington Eagles held off the Pilots 72-65 despite four Portland players scoring in double figures.
• Cassandra Brown and Cassandra Thompson each scored 16 points against the Eagles and Portland led 30-25 at the half.
• The Pilots then shot a season-best 54.5 percent at Boise State on Sunday, Dec. 21, but were ultimately unable to overcome 30 turnovers in a 94-58 loss.
• The Broncos, who turned the ball over just nine times, claimed a decisive 32-6 edge in points off of turnovers.
• Brown led the Pilots once again with 13 points.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Senior Cassandra Brown became the second Pilot to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone with 26 points during the win over Portland State on Dec. 12; Brown joined fellow senior Kari Luttinen, who scored her 1,000th career point during a win against Utah on Nov. 29.
• Luttinen enters the weekend with 1,075 career points, which ranks 16th all-time in program history, while Brown currently has 1,043 points.
• Senior Jasmine Wooton (895 points) is also poised to join the 1,000 point club.
• Portland has never had three players reach 1,000 career points during the same season.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team (Nov. 28-29) after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Portland's win over Utah (Nov. 29) she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Brown leads the WCC in three-point shooting (.451, 23-for-51) and is fifth in scoring (16.4 ppg); she's also averaging a career-best 6.2 rebounds per game, which is tops on the team.
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Jasmine Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team and the Pilots were tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.
• Last season Wooton exploded for a career-high 36 points during a 73-65 win at Pacific on Dec. 28; it's the most points scored by a Pilot since Martha Sheldon also scored 36 in 1991.
• Last season's 72-51 win over No. 24 San Diego on Jan. 8 was Portland's first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 6, 2003, when the Pilots topped No. 20 Oregon 76-58 at the Chiles Center.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • San Diego sits on top of the WCC standings after going 9-1 against non-conference foes; USD's lone loss came at home to Fresno State.
• Junior forward Malina Hood (17.3 ppg) leads the Toreros in scoring, while senior forward Sophia Ederaine is averaging a double-double (13.8 ppg, 10.3 rpg).
• BYU overcame a slow start to finish the non-conference slate with a solid 8-3 record.
• The Cougars, who have won five straight games, are led offensively by junior guard Lexi Eaton, who ranks second the WCC in scoring (19.1 ppg); senior forward Morgan Bailey is averaging 18.0 points and 10.4 boards per game.
