THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots play their first home games of the regular season this weekend when they welcome a pair of Pac-12 foes to the Chiles Center.
• First on Friday night, the Pilots host in-state rival Oregon at 7 p.m.; the Ducks are coached by former Gonzaga coach Kelly Graves, who went to Eugene after last season.
• The Washington Huskies then visit on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip-off; the Pilots are coming off their first ever win over UW, which was a 91-77 victory last year in Seattle.
LAST WEEK • First-year head coach Cheryl Sorenson notched career victory No. 1 and senior Kari Luttinen scored her 1,000th career point as the Pilots defeated Utah 58-50 at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., last Saturday.
• The Pilots pulled away down the stretch against Utah and Luttinen hit a game-clinching three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining; she'd finish with 16 points, while all-tournament selection Cassandra Brown dropped 20 on the Utes.
• On Friday, Luttinen scored 19 points in a loss to host Nevada; freshman post Sara Zaragoza had a big game down low, finishing with career highs of six blocks and nine rebounds.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Senior Kari Luttinen surpassed the 1,000 career points plateau last weekend and now has 1,008 career points, which ranks 21st all-time at UP; the guard out of Seattle is averaging 10.7 points per game for her career.
• Seniors Cassandra Brown (940 points) and Jasmine Wooton (845 points) should also become 1,000-point scorers this season.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team last weekend after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Saturday's win over Utah she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Senior Jasmine Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team and the Pilots were tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.
• Wooton landed All-WCC Honorable Mention as a junior, averaging 13.1 points and 4.3 assists; last season Wooton exploded for a career-high 36 points during a 73-65 win at Pacific on Dec. 28; it's the most points scored by a Pilot since Martha Sheldon also scored 36 in 1991.
• Brown also earned All-WCC Honorable Mention last year and is Portland's top returning scorer (14.1 ppg).
• Last season's 72-51 win over No. 24 San Diego on Jan. 8 was Portland's first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 6, 2003, when the Pilots topped No. 20 Oregon 76-58 at the Chiles Center.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • The Huskies are receiving a vote in both the AP and Coaches Polls.
• Kelsey Plum set a Husky single-game school record with 45 points in the season-opening loss to Oklahoma; Plum has three 30-point games and ranks second in the nation in scoring at 28.3 ppg.
• Washington, which is coached by second-year head coach Mike Neighbors, ranks 10th in the nation in scoring at 86.5 ppg.
• The Ducks are coming off a pair of losses to Central Michigan and American in Las Vegas, Nev., last weekend.
• 6-foot-3 junior forward Jillian Alleyne is averaging 18.0 points and 13.8 rebounds per game.
• Former Gonzaga head coach and once an assistant at Portland, head coach Kelly Graves is in his first year at Oregon.
