LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- After the Portland Pilots scored five runs to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning, Loyola Marymount responded with a game-winning RBI double by Jimmy Jack with two outs in the bottom of the frame to hand the Lions an 8-7 walk-off win in the finale of a three-game West Coast Conference series at Page Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Lions (12-8, 3-0 WCC) a sweep over the Pilots (5-14, 0-3 WCC) in the conference opener for both teams.
Trailing 7-2 entering the final inning, the Pilots were able to come all the way back to even the score. After Kevin Farley was hit by a pitch and Devin Kopas drew a walk, Michael Lucarelli sent a one-out single to left that scored Portland's first run of the inning.
Turner Gill then earned a walk to load the bases for Caleb Whalen, who greeted new pitcher Bret Dahlson with a bloop single to center field that scored Farley and pulled the Pilots within three runs. Cody Lenahan then followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Lucarelli, and just like that it was a 7-5 ballgame.
Tyler Cohen then entered the game for the Lions and worked the count to 1-2 against Portland freshman Ryan Littlefield. But Littlefield was unfazed and sent the next pitch to center field for a base hit that scored both Gill and Whalen and knotted the score up at 7-7.
Cohen was then able to end the inning with a ground-out, but the damage had been done.
The Pilots carried the momentum into the bottom of the ninth and new pitcher Colin Feldtman was able to retire the first two LMU batters of the inning. But David Edwards was able to keep the inning alive with a softly hit grounder through the right side, and Jack followed with his game-winning hit into the right field corner.
Feldtman (1-3), who was the fourth Portland pitcher on the afternoon, takes the loss, while Cohen (1-2) earns his first win of the year after facing just two batters. LMU used five pitchers total.
The game looked promising early for the Pilots, who scored twice in the top of the first inning. Whalen gave Portland a 1-0 lead when he sent a solo home run over the 'Blue Monster' in left field for his team-best third homer of the season. Three batters later Kevin Wade made it a 2-0 game when he drove in a run with a single to right-center field.
But the lead was short-lived as the Lions responded with three runs in the bottom of the first off of UP starter Jackson Lockwood. Tommy Cheek started the scoring with an RBI single, Tanner Donnels followed with a run-scoring double and Cole Trezek added a go-ahead RBI single.
The Lions would go onto score a run during each the second, third, sixth and seventh innings before the thrilling ninth.
LMU totaled 15 hits on the day, while the Pilots countered with eight. Whalen, Littlefield and Wade each had a pair of hits for Portland, and Wade extended his career and team season-best hitting streak to nine games.
The Pilots next step out of conference for a game against the Washington Huskies in Tacoma, Wash., on Tuesday. First pitch for the northwest rivals and former Pac-10 North Conference foes is set for 5 p.m. at Cheney Stadium.
