THIS WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • The Pilots open the week by hosting the No. 6 Oregon State Beavers at Joe Etzel Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
• Portland then heads north up I-5 to face the Seattle Redhawks on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Bannerwood Park, which is located in Bellevue, Wash.
• The Pilots continue play in the West Coast Conference this weekend with a three-game series against the Santa Clara Broncos in Santa Clara, Calif.
LAST WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • The Pilots dropped a three-game series to the Pepperdine Waves at Eddy D. Field Stadium last weekend in Malibu, Calif.
• Pepperdine won the opener 6-0 on Friday, claimed Saturday's game 1-0 and took the finale on Sunday by a 6-1 margin.
• The Pilots struggled to get it going offensively in Malibu as the Waves out-hit Portland 31-15.
• Kevin Farley had Portland's lone RBI during the weekend when he drove in a run on Sunday, courtesy a single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
• Caleb Whalen hit .333 (4-for-12) against the Waves, which included his 11th career triple, tying him for the third most triples all-time at UP.
• Previously the Pilots dropped a 7-3 decision to the Seattle Redhawks last Wednesday at Concordia's Hilken Stadium; Portland jumped out to a 3-0 lead before succumbing to the Redhawks.
• Turner Gill homered during the loss.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Portland's current 12-game losing streak is the longest losing streak for the Pilots since dropping 13 straight during the 2004 season.
• Portland freshman pitcher Austin Kelly, who hails from Happy Valley, Ore., and had a stellar prep career at Clackamas High School, was recently named Oregon's 2013 Prep Baseball Player of the year at the 2013 Oregon Sports Awards.
• Freshman first baseman Kevin Wade had a nine-game hitting streak snapped during the UW game on March 8; the streak is a career-high and is a season-high for the Pilots.
• Freshman DH Ryan Littlefield went 6-for-14 (.429) during Portland's series at LMU with six RBI's, a home run and two runs scored.
• Junior second baseman Caleb Whalen currently leads the team in most offensive categories, including batting average (.265), hits (26), home runs (3), runs scored (13) and triples (2); he's second in RBI's (11) and doubles (5).
• Whalen is currently tied for third all-time at UP with 11 career triples, which is just three shy of Larry Farrell's (1958-61) all-time program career record of 14 triples.
• Portland features a young pitching staff with only two seniors in the regular rotation of starters and relievers.
• The Pilots opened the season with a 1-0 win at then-12th ranked and defending national champion UCLA on Friday, Feb. 14.
• Portland scored the only run of the game against the Bruins when Caleb Whalen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning.
• UP starter Travis Radke and three relievers combined to hold the Bruins to just four hits, while recording 12 strikeouts.
• Radke, a junior left-hander, earned Freshman All-America honors in 2012 and missed most of last season with an injury.
• The Pilots were picked to finish seventh in a pre-season poll of the WCC's 10 head coaches, while Radke was selected to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
• Head coach Chris Sperry, a former standout catcher/infielder for the Pilots, notched career win No. 300 last year when Portland defeated LMU 6-3 in LA on April 21.
• Sperry, who has 329 career wins in 16+ years at the helm of the Pilots, trails only long-time Portland coach Joe Etzel, who compiled 378 career wins in 21 seasons (1966-86).
• Sperry coached his 800th career game as head coach at UP at UC Irvine on March 2, 2013.
