Box Score (pdf)PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and brought the potential game-tying run to the plate, but the Oregon State Beavers would hang on for a 9-6 win in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
Trailing 9-2 and down to their final out, the Pilots (5-23) were able to string some hits together to make things interesting in that final frame. First with runners on the corners, Devin Kopas singled deep in the hole on the left side of the infield that scored Ryan Barr from third base. Kevin Farley thing singled to center to load the bases before Chet Thompson brought home two runs with a base hit, and just like that the Pilots were within 9-5.
An Oregon State (22-6) error then allowed Farley to score to make it a 9-6 game before Ryan Littlefield stepped up to the plate, representing the potential tying run. But Oregon State reliever Scott Schultz was able to induce a game-ending ground out to second base, sealing the win for the Beavers.
OSU had previously jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs off of Portland starter Brandon Snyder in the top of the first inning.
The Pilots were able to respond with a run in the bottom of the first and another in the third to stay within reach of the sixth-ranked team in the country. Kopas knocked in the run in the first with a single that scored Caleb Whalen, and Gill scored on a wild pitch in the third to pull Portland within 4-2. Gill had led off the inning with a double off the right-field wall.
The Beavers were then able to create some separation with three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and another in the seventh.
Snyder (0-1) takes the loss after pitching just the top of the first. He was followed by Jackson Lockwood, Adam Wozniak and Alex Fisher out of the Portland bullpen. Fisher escaped a bases loaded jam with one out in the seventh when he got Andy Peterson to hit a slow roller to third before striking out Michael Conforto, OSU's leader in RBI's.
Fisher held the Beavers scoreless during 3.0 innings of work.
Oregon State reliever Zack Reser (3-0) earns the win after the Pilots chased starter Jake Thompson after 3.0 innings. Reser went 3.2 scoreless innings, surrendering three hits while fanning four. Mak Fox replaced Reser in the seventh before giving way to Shultz in the ninth.
The Beavers finished with a slight 14-9 advantage in hits and Gill, Kopas and Davis Tominaga each finished with a pair of hits for Portland. Jerad Casper was 4-for-5 to lead the Beavers and Dylan Davis finished with three RBI's.
The Pilots next travel to Bellevue, Wash., for a game against the Seattle Redhawks on Wednesday at Bannerwood Park. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
