Box Score - Game 2 (pdf)SPOKANE, Wash. --- The Gonzaga Bulldogs won both games of a double header over the Portland Pilots on Friday to open a three-game West Coast Conference series at Patterson Baseball Complex. Gonzaga won the first game 8-4 before taking the night cap 8-2.
The Pilots (8-32, 2-15 WCC) did combine for 19 hits during the two games, but left 21 runners stranded on the base paths. Payden Lamb went a combined 5-for-8 with four RBI's and two runs scored to lead the Bulldogs (14-23, 10-7 WCC).
The Pilots battled back during game one after allowing three runs to the Bulldogs in the bottom of the first inning and another run in the second. Portland got one back in the top of the third after Michael Lucarelli reached on an error, moved to second on a base hit by Tuner Gill and scored when Davis Tominaga singled up the middle.
An inning later the Pilots pulled within 4-2 after Kevin Wade drove in his first run of the game with an RBI double. Gonzaga then added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning before Wade did some more damage in the sixth. This time Wade made it a one-run game when he brought home two with a single.
Then with Gonzaga still nursing a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning, the Pilots were able to get two runners on with just one out. But the Bulldogs got out of the jam before adding three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take control of the scoreboard.
Gonzaga also escaped a bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh inning as the Pilots left nine runners stranded.
Brandon Bailey (3-5) was awarded with the win, while Tominaga (1-5) takes the loss for Portland. The Bulldogs utilized six pitchers during game one and Karl Myers notched his third save of the year. Tominaga was the first of three UP hurlers.
The Bulldogs, who committed four errors during the first game, claimed a slim 10-9 edge in hits. Lamb went 4-for-5 with three RBI's, while Wade also knocked in three for the Pilots.
Gonzaga broke open a scoreless second game with an eight-run second inning, taking advantage of three Portland errors. Joey Harris had a two-run single during the second, Caleb Wood added a two-run double and Sam Brown capped the scoring with a two-run triple.
Portland starter Colin Feldtman (1-6) was otherwise solid on the mound, working 7.0 innings. All eight runs scored on Feldtman, only two of which were earned, came in that second inning, as did five of Gonzaga's nine hits.
Brandon Snyder pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Taylor Jones (4-2) gets the win after allowing two runs in 6.1 innings. David Bigelow worked the final 2.2 innings.
The Pilots, who out-hit the Bulldogs 10-9 in game number two, scored one run in the top of the third inning and the other in the top of the seventh. Tominaga was responsible for both runs, registering an RBI single in the third and a run-scoring double the seventh. The freshman went a combined 5-for-10 with three RBI's.
Next the Pilots and Bulldogs conclude the series with the finale at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
