THIS WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • The Pilots conclude the 2014 season this week with a non-conference game against the No. 2 Oregon State Beavers on Tuesday and a West Coast Conference series at home this weekend with Brigham Young.
• The Beavers and Pilots are set to square off at 5:35 p.m. at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer, Ore.
• Portland's three-game series with BYU begins on Thursday at Joe Etzel Field at 3 p.m.; Friday's game is also scheduled for 3 p.m. and first pitch on Saturday has been moved up to 11 a.m.
• Portland will honor seniors J.R. Bunda, Bo Cornish, Colin Feldtman, Chad Kjemhus and Chet Thompson with a ceremony prior to Saturday's finale.
Â
LAST WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • The Pilots dropped a close 3-2 decision at home to the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday before winning one of three against the Pacific Tigers at Joe Etzel Field during the weekend.
• Portland's win against the Tigers came on Sunday in the 11th inning when Devin Kopas drove in the winning run with a single.
• The Pilots had previously rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the eighth when Bo Cornish and Michael Lucarelli each came through with a clutch, two-out RBI single to tie the game.
• Pacific previously swept a double header on Saturday 6-1 and 6-2.
Â
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Portland's last four wins have all come in walk-off fashion, including a pair of 3-2 walk-off wins against San Francisco during the weekend of April 25-26.
• The Pilots also recorded walk-off wins against Cal State Bakersfield (March 8) San Diego (April 12) and Pacific (May 11) to give Portland five on the season.
• Caleb Whalen recently registered a career-long 13-game hitting streak (March 28-April 13), during which he hit .396 (21-for-53).
• Whalen currently ranks third all-time at UP with 12 career triples, which is just two shy of Larry Farrell's (1958-61) all-time program career record of 14 triples.
• Whalen's six RBI's at Oregon on April 8 are tied for the fourth most in a game in program history and it's the most RBI's by a Pilot since 2009, when Garrett Queen also drove in six against Hawai'i.
• UP's 13-game losing streak earlier this season was the longest losing streak since also dropping 13 straight during the 2004 season.
• Davis Tominaga registered the second complete-game win by a UP freshman pitcher this season when he went the distance during a 9-1 win at Santa Clara on April 4; the right-hander allowed just four hits, struck out eight and walked only one, while adding an RBI single at the plate.
• Fellow freshman pitcher Austin Kelly, who hails from Happy Valley, Ore., and had a stellar prep career at Clackamas High School, was recently named Oregon's 2013 Prep Baseball Player of the year at the 2013 Oregon Sports Awards; Kelly has UP's other complete-game win by a freshman this spring.
• Several UP pitchers have missed time this season due to injury or illness, including Kody Watts, Travis Radke, Kurt Yinger, Austin Kelly, Brandon Snyder and Davis Tominaga.
• The Pilots were picked to finish seventh in a pre-season poll of the WCC's 10 head coaches, while Radke was selected to the All-WCC Preseason Team.
• Head coach Chris Sperry, a former standout catcher/infielder for the Pilots, notched career win No. 301 last year when Portland defeated LMU 6-3 in LA on April 21.
• Sperry, who has 335 career wins in 16+ years at the helm of the Pilots, trails only long-time Portland coach Joe Etzel, who compiled 378 career wins in 21 seasons (1966-86).
Â
CHASING HISTORY • Junior infielder Caleb Whalen currently has 12 career triples, which is the third most all-time in the 91-year history of the UP baseball program.
• Whalen sits only two triples shy of Portland's all-time leader Larry Farrell, who totaled 14 triples from 1958 to 1961.
• As a sophomore last year, Whalen had six triples, which ranked second in the WCC and was one shy of matching a program record for most triples in a season.
• Whalen has a team-best three triples this spring.
Â
YOUNG GUNS • The Pilots feature a fairly young pitching staff despite returning most of the pitchers from last season, and the Pilots feature only two seniors in the regular rotation of starters and relievers.
• Freshmen Austin Kelly and Davis Tominaga have both been used as Portland's Friday starter and both have a complete-game win to their credit.
• Tominaga has struck out a staff-best 36 this season.
• Both Tominaga and Kelly can play in the field as well and Tominaga is batting a team-best .291.
Â
UPDATING THE ETZ • The University of Portland has announced a three phase renovation of Joe Etzel Field, beginning with a transition to a field turf surface, lights for night games, a new scoreboard and new fencing.
• The University hopes to have phase one finished in time for the 2015 season.
• Phases two and three include a new press box, berm seating down the right field line, new dugouts, a new grandstand, a VIP section, a new entry gate and ticket office, home locker room, coaches offices and a field maintenance building.
