Box Score I
Box Score (pdf)KEIZER, Ore. --- After the Pilots had tied the score with two runs in the top of the seventh, the No. 2 Oregon State Beavers answered with a two-out grand slam off the bat of Dylan Davis before claiming an 8-4 win over the Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on a warm Tuesday evening at Volcanoes Stadium. The Beavers (39-8) scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning before the Pilots (11-38) capped the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.
After trailing 2-0 for most of the game, the Pilots were able to string some hits together in the top of the seventh, courtesy a trio of freshmen. Freshman Kevin Wade began the rally by drilling a double off the left field wall to lead off the frame. And then after Cody Lenahan fouled out for the first out of the inning, freshman Devin Kopas sent a bloop single to center, giving the Pilots runners on the corners.
Freshman pinch hitter Cooper Hummel then came through with a hard-hit, RBI double to deep center field that cut the Oregon State lead in half and moved Kopas into scoring position. And after the next hitter Bo Cornish sent a fly ball to center field, Kopas easily trotted home with the tying run on the sacrifice fly.
But then with the Pilots looking to continue the rally with Michael Lucarelli at the plate and a runner still on second, Oregon State left fielder Michael Conforto made a highlight-reel worthy diving catch on a deep foul ball down the left field line to end the inning.
The Beavers added a little insurance in the eighth, but the Pilots refused to go quietly as Cornish knocked in another run, this time on a ground out to second, and Chet Thompson followed with an RBI single in the top of the ninth. OSU reliever Scott Schultz was then finally able to record the final out, ending the game.
Portland starter Travis Radke did well to limit the OSU chances in 6.0 innings of work. The junior lefty struck out seven and allowed the two runs, one in the bottom of the second and another in the third, on six hits.
Junior reliever Austin Kelly (1-6) takes the loss after hitting two batters in the top of the seventh. Fellow reliever Brandon Snyder also hit a batter before Davis walked to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded to face new pitcher J.R. Bunda. The designated hitter, who started the game on the hill for the Beavers, then sent a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left.
Zack Reser (5-0), OSU's third pitcher of the evening, earns the win after tossing just two-thirds of inning. The Beavers used five pitchers total, while the Pilots countered with six.
Thompson and Wade each finished with two of Portland's eight hits, while Davis was 2-for-4 with five RBI's to help the Beavers claim 11 hits total.
The Pilots next return to Joe Etzel Field to host the BYU Cougars for a three-game, season-ending West Coast Conference series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday, while Saturday's finale is scheduled for 11 a.m.
