Box Score (pdf)PORTLAND, Ore. --- After Portland claimed an early one-run lead, the BYU Cougars scored six unanswered runs en route to a 6-1 win over the Pilots in the season finale for both West Coast Conference teams at Joe Etzel Field on Saturday afternoon. The game marked the final appearance at Joe Etzel Field for Portland's five seniors, and Portland honored J.R. Bunda, Bo Cornish, Colin Feldtman, Chad Kjemhus and Chet Thompson with a pre-game ceremony.
The Pilots (11-41, 5-22 WCC) got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, freshman outfielder Jason Rosen drew a walk before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Sophomore Ryan Barr then came through with an RBI single to center field that scored Rosen and gave Portland's its first lead of the three-game series.
But the lead was short-lived as BYU (22-31, 12-15 WCC) immediately responded with three runs in the top of the third inning. After Brennon Lund and Erik Urry both singled to begin the frame, Dillon Robinson left the yard with a three-run homer over the right field fence. Robinson's long fly gave BYU a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Kjemhus (1-4), Portland's starter on the hill, would recover from there and retire the next 10 BYU batters in order. Kjemhus did run into a bit of trouble in the top of the sixth inning when the Cougars loaded the bases with just one out. But the Lake Oswego, Ore., native calmly fanned Mackay Jacobsen and Hayden Nielsen to end the inning and the threat.
Kjemhus' afternoon also included a three-pitch inning, which came in the top of the fourth. His final line included eight hits and three runs in 6.0 innings, six strike outs and only one walk.
The Cougars scored one run in the top of the seventh inning, courtesy a Kelton Caldwell two-out, RBI single off Portland reliever Kurt Yinger to make the score 4-1. BYU then added a little insurance with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth.
Desmond Poulson (5-5) earns the win for the Cougars, going 6.2 innings. He yielded six hits and one walk, while striking out two. Relievers Hayden Rogers and Chunner Nyberg combined to hold the Pilots hitless and scoreless during the final 2.0 innings.
BYU out-hit Portland 12-6, and both Barr and Caleb Whalen finished with two hits for the Pilots.
