FARMVILLE, Va. --- The Longwood Lancers scored twice in the first half before holding on for a 2-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference men's soccer game played on Thursday evening at the Longwood Athletics Complex. The Pilots (2-5-2) did claim a slight 15-14 edge in shots and held a 9-4 advantage in corners, but were never able to fully recover from the two-goal deficit.
Longwood's (5-3-0) first goal came early as Willy Miezan found the back of the net with a header in the fourth minute. The goal is the seventh of the fall for Miezan and it came on a nice ball sent in by Will Lambert.
From there the Pilots did well to push for the equalizer, and Erik Edwardson had a shot saved by Longwood goalkeeper Carlos Canas in the 20th minute. Shots followed from Hugo Rhoads, Matthew Coffey and Joey Jones, but the game would remain 1-0 in Longwood's favor until the 40th minute.
That's when Lambert scored to make it a 2-0 game just before the half. Lambert received a pass from Christian Keilty inside the right edge of the 18-yard box before burying a shot into the top right corner of the net. It's Lambert's first goal of the year and it provided the Lancers a little breathing room at the break.
The second half brought more shots from the Pilots, who were able to earn four corner kicks during one four-minute stretch. Brandon Zambrano sent a shot high off one of the corners, and Reid Baez forced Canas into making a save in the 73rd minute.
Portland earned another corner in the 84th minute, which was whipped in by Coffey. Canas came through with another clutch save a shot by Rhoads, and moments later Edwardson sent a header wide of the post.
Canas then denied a shot by Lionel Mills in the 89th minute to preserve the shutout. The keeper finished with four stops on the night, while Portland goalkeeper Paul Christensen countered with six saves.
Next up for the Pilots is a match with defending national champion and No. 11 Virginia on Monday in Charlottesville. Kickoff for the Pilots and Cavaliers is set for 4 p.m. (Pacific).
