THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots tip-off the regular season this weekend when they host the Willamette Bearcats at the Chiles Center on Saturday evening; the non-conference game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
• The No. 9 Oregon State Beavers then visit the Chiles Center for a non-conference tilt on Monday night, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
• Both games will be streamed live and free on TheW.tv.
LAST WEEK • Junior transfer Corissa Turley scored 19 points in her Pilot debut as Portland defeated the Warner Pacific Knights 70-67 on Friday night at the Chiles Center.
• Turley shot 8-for-12 from the field, hit three three-pointers and scored seven consecutive points as the Pilots ended the game on a 9-0 run.
• Freshman Ellie Woerner was also solid in her collegiate debut, contributing 17 points, while junior transfer Rachelle Owens added 10 points and seven assists.
NEXT WEEK • The Pilots follow these two home games with their first road trip of the year when they travel to Montana.
• While in Big Sky Country, the Pilots will play Montana State on Friday, Nov. 20 and Montana on Sun., Nov. 20.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • The new-look Pilots feature six newcomers to go along with six returners in head coach Cheryl Sorenson's second year at the helm of the program.
• Junior transfer guards Holly Blades and Rachelle Owens both came to The Bluff from the College of Southern Idaho, while guard Corissa Turley previously attended College of the Sequoias; Turley poured in 19 points during Portland's exhibition win over Warner Pacific, while Owens added 10 points and seven assists.
• Completing the newcomers are three freshmen, two of which hail from the Pacific Northwest; post Julie Spencer is originally from Chehalis, Wash., while guard Ellie Woerner calls Sammamish, Wash., home; Darian Slaga is originally from Prescott Valley, Ariz.
• Headlining Portland's six returners are junior guards Hannah Mattson and Kaylie Van Loo; both Mattson and Van Loo appeared in all 30 games last year, with each making eight starts.
• Sophomore posts Ashley Gray and Sara Zaragoza also return after promising freshman campaigns.
• Cheryl Sorenson begins her second season as head coach of the Pilots after assuming the role last year after long-time coach Jim Sollars' retirement.
• Sorenson spent her first three years on The Bluff as an assistant coach.
• The Pilots lost three 1,000-point scorers to graduation; Cassandra Brown (1,396 points), Kari Luttinen (1,366 points) and Jasmine Wooton (1,130 points) all reached that historic milestone last year, becoming the first Pilot trio to do so in the same season.
• Brown captivated the nation last year when she won the 2015 State Farm Three-Point Championship (men's and women's) on ESPN, which was part of Final Four Weekend in Indianapolis, Ind.; Brown defeated Dayton's Andrea Hoover in the women's final before conquering Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos, who was the men's champion.
• The Pilots were picked to finish 10th in the WCC this season.
• Portland has been to four NCAA Tournaments (1994-97), two WNIT's (1998 & 2009) and one WBI (2010).
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • The Willamette Bearcats are an NCAA DIII team that plays in the Northwest Conference.
• The Bearcats went 7-18 last season and are led by sophomore guard Kylie Towry, who is their top returning scorer after averaging 9.7 points per contest last year.
• Peg Swadener, who was previously the associate head coach at Portland State, is in her fourth season as head coach of the Bearcats.
• The ninth-ranked Beavers are coming off their first ever Pac-12 Conference Championship and an NCAA Second Round appearance.
• 6-6 senior post Ruth Hamblin (12.9 ppg, 8.6) is the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year and she was named a Third Team All-American last season; she already holds the school record for career blocks (295).
• Head coach Scott Rueck is in his sixth year at Oregon State; Rueck was previously head coach at George Fox, where he won the 2009 DIII National Title and was named the National Coach of the Year.
