THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots play their final two home games of the season this week when they welcome West Coast Conference opponents Pacific and Saint Mary's to the Chiles Center.
• The Pacific Tigers first visit on Thursday before the Saint Mary's Gaels come to The Bluff on Saturday, with both games scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
• Saturday will be senior night for the Pilots and Portland will honor Cassandra Brown, Kari Luttinen, Colleen Olinger, Cassandra Thompson and Jasmine Wooton before the game.
LAST WEEK • Portland dropped a pair of close games in Southern California last weekend, succumbing to Pepperdine 76-72 on Thursday before dropping a 77-73 decision to LMU on Saturday.
• In Malibu on Thursday, the Pilots shot 50 percent and had the ball down three in the closing seconds of the game, but the Waves prevailed; Cassandra Brown scored a team-high 19 points and was one of four Pilots to score in double figures.
• Saturday's game in Los Angeles followed a similar script as Portland's last-second rally fell just short; the Pilots again out-shot their opponent from the field and Brown poured in 26 points.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Senior Cassandra Brown is having a remarkable year and ranks 19th nationally in three-point percentage (.426) and is 20th in free throw percentage (82-for-94, .872); she scored a season-best 30 points during a win over LMU (Jan. 15) and she notched her first double-double (23 pts, 10 rebs) of the year at Pacific (Jan. 22).
• Brown (1,308), Kari Luttinen (1,292) and Jasmine Wooton (1,069) have each become 1,000 career point scorers this season, with Wooton accomplishing the feat most recently against Pepperdine (Jan .17); Luttinen scored her 1,000th career point during a win against Utah (Nov. 29), while Brown reached the milestone during the win over Portland State (Dec. 12).
• This the first time in program history to have three players reach 1,000 career points during the same season, and all three reached the milestone during a win.
• Wooton had a career-best nine assists against BYU (Dec. 29), which was the most assists by a Pilot since ReZina TecleMariam handed out nine dimes on Jan. 2, 2012.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team (Nov. 28-29) after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Portland's win over Utah (Nov. 29) she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Brown is first in the WCC in three-point percentage (.426), is second in three-pointers made (63), third in free throw percentage (.872) and fourth in scoring (17.8 ppg); Luttinen is ninth in scoring (14.0 ppg).
• In WCC games, Brown is first in three-pointers made (37) and third in scoring (18.9 ppg).
• Portland as a team leads the league and is 21st in the country in three-point percentage (.366); in WCC games the Pilots are tops in free throw percentage (.777)
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • The Tigers rank second in the WCC in scoring (69.4 ppg) and are led by senior post Kendall Kenyon (13.6 ppg, 11.3 rpg), who is the top rebounder in the conference.
• Lynne Roberts is in her ninth season as head coach at Pacific.
• The Gaels are currently in second place in the WCC; junior guard Lauren Nicholson is the team's top scorer (17.0 ppg) and head coach Paul Thomas is in his ninth year with the Gaels.
• On Jan. 22 Pacific needed a late three-pointer to defeat the Pilots 71-69 in Stockton, Calif.; the Gaels topped the Pilots 66-53 on Jan. 24 in Moraga, Calif.
