Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Junior Jackson Lockwood pitched 8.0 solid innings on Friday night as the Portland Pilots were shutout, 3-0, in the first game of West Coast Conference play by the San Diego Toreros.
Â
San Diego (8-7, 1-0 WCC) pushed across the game's first run in the bottom half of the first. Austin Bailey drove an RBI single to right after a double and a hit by pitch.
Â
Lockwood (1-3) settled down after Bailey's at-bat to induce the first of three double plays on the day and get out of the inning. The crafty righty scattered nine hits during his complete game. He fanned five without issuing a walk, but the Toreros would tack on a run in the second and seventh innings.
Â
Unfortunately for the Pilots (4-17, 0-1 WCC), David Hill (3-2) conjured his best stuff to counter Lockwood's performance. The Toreros' righty recorded 14 strikeouts en route to a complete game of his own, limiting the Pilots to just four hits on the evening.
Â
Junior Eric Sapp recorded his first multi-hit game as a Pilot with singles in his first two plate appearances.
Â
Portland looks to rebound on Saturday as RHP Kurt Yinger (0-3, 6.20 ERA) gets the start against the lefty PJ Conlon (1-1, 2.61). First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM.
