Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Junior Kevin Farley tallied a pair of hits and a pair of runs, but the San Diego Toreros erupted for a six run inning Saturday night to hand the Portland Pilots a 9-2 loss as West Coast Conference play resumed at Fowler Park.
Â
Portland's record moves to 4-18 overall (0-2 WCC) following the loss while San Diego improves to 9-7 (2-0 WCC).
Â
Farley led off the top of the second with a double to center field and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Cody Lenahan. After the next batter was retired, Farley raced home as a pitch skirted towards the backstop, giving the Pilots an early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Pilots' lead would hold for senior RHP Kurt Yinger (0-4) until the fifth inning. Able to dance out of trouble in three of the first four innings, the Toreros opened the fifth with three consecutive hits to take a 2-1 lead.
Â
A sacrifice bunt later in the inning pushed the lead to 3-1, but the Toreros kept pressing with an RBI double from Colton Waltner. Waltner then scored on an error, effectively ending Yinger's outing. Yinger finished the day having allowed six runs (4 earned) on 10 hits over 4.2 innings of work.
San Diego tacked on another three runs in the sixth to give PJ Conlon (2-1) all the run support he needed. Conlon scattered five hits over 7.0 innings, allowing two runs (1 earned).
Â
Sophomore Kevin Wade added an RBI for the Pilots while junior Kody Kulhman and freshman Jake Hawken provided solid relief outings. Kuhlman pitched 1.2 innings before giving the ball to Hawken, who pitched a scoreless eighth. Neither reliever allowed a hit.
Â
Portland looks to capture the series finale on Sunday with RHP Davis Tominaga (1-2, 3.86 ERA) facing RHP Gary Cornish (0-0, 5.40) at noon.
