SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Portland loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but the San Diego Toreros escaped the jam unscathed, holding on for a 4-3 win over the Pilots Sunday afternoon.
Â
Senior Turner Gill and junior Kevin Farley started the eighth inning rally with back-to-back walks. Senior Cody Lenahan followed the walks by driving an 0-2 pitch to left center, scoring Gill. An intentional walk gave the Pilots (4-19, 0-3 WCC) a golden opportunity to take the lead.
Â
San Diego (10-7, 3-0 WCC) bore down to escape the jam as Anthony McIver struck out the pinch hitter and ended the inning by inducing a groundout. McIver pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to collect his fourth save of the season.
Â
Portland starter Davis Tominaga's complete game effort was not enough as the tough luck loss moved his record to 1-3. Â He allowed four runs on nine hits while walking two.
Â
Tominaga's only mistake came in the second inning. With two on, Riley Adams took an 0-1 pitch over the left center wall to give the Toreros a 3-2 lead.
Â
Senior Caleb Whalen led off the game with a triple, his first of three hits on the day. Whalen then immediately scored on a balk to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead. Portland added another run in the second, courtesy of an RBI single by freshman Geoffrey Lee.
Â
CJ Burdick (1-0) pitched 3.2 innings after San Diego starter Gary Cornish lasted just 3.0-plus innings.
