THIS WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • The Pilots play their final two non-conference games in neutral locations as they travel to Pasco, Wash., to face Washington State on Tuesday before playing Oregon State in Keizer, Ore., on Wednesday.
• First pitch for the Pilots and Cougars at Gesa Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m., while the game with OSU at Volcano Stadium will begin at 6:05 p.m.
LAST WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL • The Pilots dropped a couple of heartbreakers to Santa Clara last weekend at Joe Etzel Field as the Broncos swept the three-game WCC series.
• After Santa Clara won 5-1 on Friday, the Pilots led late on both Saturday and Sunday before the Broncos rallied to win both games.
• On Sunday the Pilots took a 5-3 lead into the ninth before the Broncos exploded for five runs en route to an 8-6 win; Portland's Cody Lenahan homered twice, Turner Gill hit a solo shot in the ninth and the Pilots loaded the bases with one out before the Broncos turned a double play to end it.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Cody Lenahan homered in his first two at-bats against the Santa Clara Broncos at Joe Etzel Field last Sunday; in the ninth, Lenahan nearly became the first player in program history with three home runs in the same game, but his shot to left-center field missed leaving the yard by about two feet; he settled for a double.
• Lenahan joins a long list of Pilots with two home runs in the same game and he's the first to accomplish the feat since Caleb Whalen homered twice against Kansas State on Feb. 20, 2014.
• Earlier this season Kevin Farley hit an inside-the-park home run at Joe Etzel Field; it's believed to be the first inside-the-parker at Joe Etzel Field during at least the last 10 years, and the solo HR proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win over LMU.
• Turner Gill currently ranks second all-time at UP with 53 career doubles and he's just five doubles away from setting a new program record; he also ranks 15th nationally among active players in career doubles.
• Gill has a career-best nine home runs this season, which ranks third in the WCC.
• Caleb Whalen is tied for 11th among active players nationally with 13 career triples; Whalen, who is currently unavailable due to an injury, ranks second all-time at UP in career triples, and he is just one triple shy of Larry Farrell's (1958-61) all-time program career record of 14 triples.
• Portland's game against Seattle on Feb. 17 was the 3,000th game in the history of the University of Portland baseball program, which dates back to 1923.
• That Seattle game was also the 900th game at the helm of the Pilots for head coach Chris Sperry, who began his coaching career in 1998.
• Portland's 15 hits in the 9-7 loss at UC Riverside on Feb. 15 were the most hits for the Pilots in a game since April 3, 2013; the Pilots followed that performance with 15 more hits during a 9-0 win over Seattle at Joe Etzel Field on Feb. 17 and they collected 15 hits again on March 1 against UC Davis.
• Joe Etzel Field, Portland's home ballpark, received a new surface during the off-season, switching from natural grass to artificial AstroTurf; the Etz also received new fencing, bullpens and a scoreboard and the improvements mark the beginning of a three-phase, long-term upgrade to the facility.
• Sperry, a former standout catcher/infielder for the Pilots, has compiled 345 career wins in 17+ years at the helm; he trails only long-time Portland coach Joe Etzel, who collected 378 career wins in 21 seasons (1966-86).
• Assistant coach Larry Casian spent parts of nine years in the big leagues as a pitcher with the Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox.

• Donnie Marbut is in his 11th season as head coach of the Cougars.
• The Beavers are batting .278 as a team, are holding their opponents to a .217 average and claim a staff ERA of 3.00.
• Junior Jeff Hendrix is batting a team-best .345 and freshman K.J. Harrison has seven HR's and 46 RBI's.
