MILWAUKEE, Wisc. --- Four different Pilots scored a goal, Allison Wetherington claims the game-winner and Ellie Boon added two assists as Portland won 4-3 on the road against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Friday night at Valley Fields. Twice the Pilots jumped ahead by two goals, and twice Marquette (1-2-0) pulled one back, but Portland (1-1-0) would hold on for the big win away from home.
Â
Freshman Cecilia Pedersen opened the scoring for the Pilots with an early goal in the third minute. Pederson finished with a stellar touch about six yards out on a great ball sent in by Boon from the left side. It's the first career goal for Pedersen, and it handed the Pilots the early lead.
Â
The Golden Eagles responded, and in the 11th minute Caroline Fink evened the score. Fink got behind the Portland backline after Marquette won a header near the halfway line, dribbled up field and finished inside the right post from 14 yards out.
Â
The Pilots then scored a crucial goal to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room at half. The goal was again set up by Boon, who found an unmarked Noelle La Prevotte with a long pass across the field. La Prevotte took a couple of touches to get inside the box and buried a shot into the top shelf from 17 yards out.
Â
Portland controlled possession early in the second half, and in the 50th minute the Pilots jumped ahead 3-1. This time the ball fell to the feet of Devlyn Jeter on a corner from Wetherington. From point-blank range, Jeter drilled a shot past the Marquette goalkeeper Amanda Engel.
Â
Moments later the Pilots' lead was cut in half when Jacie Jermier gained possession near the halfline, dribbled the ball about 20 yards and found the right corner of the net from 22 yards out. Her first goal of the year made it a 3-2 game.
Â
Wetherington then provided what would prove to be the winner when she slotted one past Engel in the 69th minute on a penalty. The Pilots were awarded the free attempt when Engel took down Jess Kennedy inside the area after failing to collect a Portland cross.
Â
The Golden Eagles did score again late with Darian Powell finishing from six yards out in the 87th minute, but the Pilots did well after that to hold on and claim the victory.
Â
La Prevotte, Jeter and Wetherington all joined Pedersen in scoring their first goals of the season, and Portland goalkeeper Hanna de Haan finished with six saves on the night.
Â
The Pilots next travel to South Bend, Ind., for a match against No. 7 Notre Dame on Sunday. Kickoff at Alumni Stadium is set for 10:30 a.m. (Pacific).
