TULSA, Okla. --- Portland sophomore Erik Edwardson scored twice and it appeared the Pilots were on their way to a win on Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Soccer Stadium, but the Tulsa Golden Hurricane notched the equalizer in the 88th min and scored the winner in overtime to claim a 3-2 victory. The two goals are Edwardson's first of the season.
Â
The first 45 minutes were evenly played for the most part, but it was Edwardson who gave the Pilots (1-4-1) a lead with his first goal of the year in the 41st minute. The sophomore found himself in a 1-v-1 with Tulsa's Jake McGuire, took a touch to get around the keeper and buried a shot into the back of the net from 12 yards out. Colby Trah picks up the assist, his first of the season.
Â
The Golden Hurricane nearly responded with a quick equalizer, but Christensen denied a shot from Miguel Velasquez to allow the Pilots to take their 1-0 lead into the half.
Â
Tulsa applied pressure in the Portland half early in the second half, and they found the equalizer off a corner kick in the 59th minute. On a well-placed ball into the center of the box from Geoffrey Dee, Bradley Bourgeois elevated to put away a header from seven yards out.
Â
The score remained tied until Edwardson tallied his second goal of the game, this time coming on a cross from Jackson Jellah, who whipped in a brilliant ball from the right wing. Edwardson nodded it past the keeper and the Pilots claimed a one-goal lead in the 80th minute.
Â
The lead would stand until the 88th minute when Velasquez came through with a clutch goal to level the score and send the game to extra time. Tulsa's late goal also was on a corner, and Velasquez was in the right place at the right time to finish with the equalizer.
Â
And then in the 97th minute, Juan Sanchez headed in the game-winner, handing the Golden Hurricane (3-2-1) the victory.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host in-state rival Oregon State at Merlo Field on Thursday night. Kickoff for the Pilots and No. 12 Beavers is set for 7 p.m.
