SEATTLE, Wash. --- Sophomore goalkeeper Paul Christensen was stellar in goal and the Pilots were solid on defense all afternoon as Portland played the No. 10 Washington Huskies to a 0-0 draw on Sunday at Husky Soccer Stadium. Christensen records his second straight shutout against a top-10 opponent from the Pac-12 Conference.
The Pilots (2-4-2) withstood some early Washington (4-1-3) pressure before responding with some pressure in the other half of the field. In the 15th minute, Erik Edwardson whipped a ball into the box from left of the 18. Thomas Peterson did well to get to the ball and sent a header towards the goal, but Washington keeper Ryan Herman smothered it with a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
Moments later Christensen claimed a diving save of his own when he denied a free kick from Henry Wingo, who hit one towards the left post from 20 yards out.
Christensen again rejected Wingo early in the second half after a ball fell to the feet of the Washington midfielder in the center of the box. Wingo was able to put a decent shot on frame, but Christensen came through with the clutch save.
The second half brought more heavy pressure from the Huskies, but the Pilots defended well and continued to create chances in the final third. In the 56th minute Edwardson dribbled into the box and hit a shot from about 15 yards out. But like Christensen, Herman corralled the shot to keep the game 0-0.
Hugo Rhoads sent a dangerous corner into the box in the 82nd minute that forced Herman into making a save. Eddie Sanchez then tried to put away the rebound, but his strike was wide.
After regulation ended with the game still knotted at 0-0, Portland had the best chances during the first overtime. Joey Jones hit one high in the 98th minute, and Matthew Coffey nearly ended it moments later. But his shot from point-blank range was cleared off the line by a UW defender.
The Pilots continued to get quality opportunities in the second OT, and in the 103rd minute Herman made yet another save, this time on a shot off of the foot of Edwardson.
It was then Christensen's turn to keep the game scoreless when he corralled an awkward, bouncing ball sent in from right of the 18. The save sparked a Portland counter, but Edwardson's shot at the other end was just wide.
UW had a few more chances in the closing minutes, but the Pilots held on for the draw.
Christensen finished the day with nine saves, while his UW counterpart made five.
Next up for the Pilots is a challenging road trip that takes the Pilots to the state of Virginia for two non-conference games. First Portland will be in Farmville for a tilt against Longwood on Thursday at 3 p.m. (Pacific).
Then comes a match-up with reigning national champion and fourth-ranked Virginia in Charlottesville on Monday.
