THIS WEEK
• The Pilots conclude the regular season this week when they travel to San Diego, Calif., for a West Coast Conference showdown with the San Diego Toreros on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
Â
LAST WEEK
• The Pilots split their two WCC road games last weekend, topping San Francisco 1-0 on Friday night before the Santa Clara Broncos scored a late goal on Sunday to claim a 1-0 win.
• Portland's goal against the Dons came in the fifth minute on a corner sent in by Allison Wetherington.
• On the perfectly placed ball, Ellie Boon was there to knock it in for her first goal and game-winner of the year.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Lusby recorded her fifth shutout.
• Portland was solid on defense against the Broncos, but the home side found the back of the net with the game-winner in the 82nd minute.
Â
ABOUT THE PILOTS
• With her goal at Santa Clara on Sunday, Ellie Boon becomes the 12th Pilot to score this season.
• Portland honored its senior class on Sunday, Oct. 23, as Ellie Boon, Hanna de Haan, Alyssa Edenstrom, Devlyn Jeter and Allison Wetherington all made their final regular season appearance at Merlo Field.
• The group, who entered UP as the No. 5 recruiting class in the nation, helped the Pilots win the WCC in 2013.
• Portland's game at BYU on Oct. 15 was the 300th career game at the helm of the Pilots for head coach Garrett Smith.
• Smith is a Portland men's soccer alum who has been named WCC Coach of the Year six times; he's posted a career overall record of 217-64-23 (.752) in 13-plus years, while guiding the Pilots to a remarkable 76-22-9 (.752) mark in the WCC; he led the Pilots to a national title in 2005.
• Portland sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Lusby landed WCC Player of the Week (Sept. 26) honors after registering two shutouts on the road during the week of Sept. 19-25; she made 11 saves total as the Pilots defeated both Oregon, which was No. 16 in the RPI at the time, and UC Irvine 1-0.
• Lusby has five shutouts in six starts this season and she combined with senior keeper Hanna de Haan on a sixth blank sheet.
• De Haan, a senior from Leer, Germany, ranks first all-time at Portland in career saves per game (4.00) and is ninth in both career save percentage (.784) and overall career saves (120).
• Junior Hannah Griffiths Boston, who entered the year with two career goals, ranked in the top 20 nationally in goals earlier this season, and she currently leads the Pilots and is No. 3 in the WCC with eight goals.
• With three goals against PSU (Aug. 26), Griffiths Boston became the first Pilot to notch a hat trick since Amanda Frisbie scored four goals against Fresno State in 2012.
• The Pilots have registered two 6-0 wins this season, with both coming against opponents from the Big Sky (vs. PSU on Aug. 26 & vs. SUU on Sept. 9); Portland hasn't scored that many goals in a game twice in the same season since 2009.
• Those six goals against Portland State on Aug. 26 were the most goals scored by the Pilots in a game since tallying seven goals during a win over Saint Mary's in 2011.
• With home wins over Southern Utah and St. John's, the Pilots claimed the team title at the 2016 Nike Invitational (Sept. 2-4); senior Allison Wetherington was named the invite's offensive MVP, while Devlyn Jeter was voted the defensive MVP.
• Wetherington was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week (Sept. 4) after notching a goal and an assist vs. St. John's on Sept. 4; her goal, which was the game-winner, was a corner kick that she bent directly in.
• Five of Portland's seven freshmen hail from the Portland metropolitan area: Lucy Davidson (Scappoose, Ore.), Rachel Khaw (Hillsboro, Ore.), Brianna Miyama (Hillsboro, Ore.), Natalie Muth (Scappoose, Ore.) and Rylee Seekins (Vancouver, Wash.) all call the Portland/Vancouver area home, while Larkin Russell (Spokane, Wash.) and Kimberly Hazlett (Bellingham, Wash.) hail from Washington.
• Portland won the NCAA National Championship in 2002 and in 2005, and the 2005 team was inducted into the UP Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 1.
• The Pilots have advanced to the post-season during 21 of the past 24 seasons.
• Former Pilot midfielder Lisa Chambers is in her 10th year as an assistant coach, while goalkeeping coach and UP alum Angela Harrison is in her second season on the women's soccer staff.
• The Pilots have led the nation in attendance during 10 of the last 11 years.
Â
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• The Toreros are coming off a split on the road last weekend, overcoming Pacific 2-1 in double overtime before falling to Saint Mary's 3-1.
• Three Toreros have scored five goals this season, led by sophomore Summer Mason, who also has a team-best five assists; freshman keeper Amber Michel has played every minute in goal, posting six shutouts and a 1.28 GAA.
• Ada Greenwood is in his 14th year as head coach at San Diego, and he's led his team to the NCAA postseason right times.
