LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Portland juniors Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia won the doubles title Sunday at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic, hosted by UNLV. The victory capped an impressive weekend for the Pilots as the team claimed two of the three draw titles. Junior Pierre Garcia and sophomore Carlos Donat were named Flight 2 singles co-champions after both reached the finals, while Mathieu Garcia made a brilliant run to the Flight 1 singles title match before falling on Sunday.
The Pilots recorded a combined overall record of 15-4 at the high-profile tournament, which included competitors from traditional tennis powers UCLA, USC, Oregon and UNLV.
"The day started really well with the super close doubles final," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "For the third day in a row Mike and Mathieu were down a match point and ended up winning. They had a great three days of doubles in this tournament. We showed a lot of improvement in that area."
Portland's top doubles tandem overcame match points in three consecutive matches and won all three in tie-breakers to claim the crown. The duo defeated Joe DiGuillo and Austin Rapp of UCLA in Sunday's title match by a 9-7 margin in the tie-breaker. Their path also included wins over teams from Oregon and USC.
Mathieu Garcia dropped the singles championship match Joe DiGuillo after navigating his way to the finals with a pair of comeback wins against Riley Smith (USC) and Alex Cosbinov (UNLV) and then knocking off Simon Stevens (Oregon) in the semifinals in straight sets. DiGuillo, meanwhile, did not drop a set in his run to the title.
"The singles final was a little bit rough," Gross noted. "Mathieu spent a lot of hours on the court over the last couple days. Actually quite a few more hours than his opponent who had a little easier route to the final. Plus, his opponent is just a very good, solid player. Mathieu did everything he could out there, but it just wasn't enough today."
Pierre Garcia and Donat were deemed co-champions after each came back from first set losses to win their semifinal matches against UCLA's Michael Guzman and UNLV's Richard Soldberg, respectively, on Saturday.
Pierre Garcia and Donat also teamed up to reach the doubles semifinals.
"Overall I am super pleased with the tournament and our results," Gross said. "It's great to see hard work pay off. Every tournament doesn't always prove that, but this one did and we are for sure coming home a better team."
Portland will conclude the 2016 fall season at the Duck Invitational hosted by Oregon on Nov. 11-13.
