PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory Friday afternoon in non-conference action at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots improve to 2-3 on the season, while Seattle falls to 0-7.
The Pilots set the tone of the match with a dominating doubles sweep. Sophomores Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia won 6-0 at No. 1 in their first dual doubles match together this season. The Pilots also won 6-2 at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Mathieu Garcia then won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles followed by Pervolarakis with a straight sets win at No. 1, his second consecutive singles win. Sophomore Pierre Garcia then clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot.
The Pilots completed the sweep with straight set wins from freshmen Felix Fan and Carlos Donat as well as a three set victory from sophomore Jared Madison. Madison is now 3-0 in singles play this year.
"We played well enough today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "The tennis wasn't spectacular, but after last weekend's thrilling matches anything was bound to be a letdown. I think we need to lift our level a little higher tomorrow. Idaho has a very solid team and they are very talented. It should be good matches at every spot."
The Pilots will have a quick turnaround and host the Idaho Vandals (1-0) on Saturday at 11 a.m. Live video and stats will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
