Box Score (PDF)PORTLAND, Ore. --- Senior OF Caleb Whalen drove in three runs with a three-hit performance to lead the Portland Pilots to a 4-3 win over the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The game picked up in the 5th inning after Saturday's game was suspended.
Portland improves to 8-3 on the season while UC Riverside falls to 4-7.
Whalen knocked in the game's first run on Saturday in the third inning. A sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position as Whalen stepped up to the plate. The senior lifted a fly ball into shallow right field.
The hit easily scored junior Michael Forgione from third and an errant throw brought sophomore Geoffrey Lee in as well, giving the Pilots the 2-0 lead.
UC Riverside answered in the fourth inning without a hit. Vince Fernandez opened the inning with a bunt in front of the plate that the Pilots were not able to handle cleanly. Following a walk to Aaron Cisneros, Tyler Walker attempted a sacrifice bunt but with the rain pouring down, sophomore Jordan Horak's throw sailed into right field.
Horak (1-0) rebounded quickly following the error, striking out the next three hitters to keep the lead intact.
Horak worked a gem in his rain-shortened outing. The lefty struck out eight Highlanders in 5.0 innings while walking three. He also did not allow a hit until Casey Worden's single in the fifth.
Whalen came through for the Pilots again in the fifth with a two-run double to once again score Forgione and Lee. Only one more batter would come to the plate on Saturday as the teams and umpires agreed to suspend the game for the night.
Portland turned to senior Jackson Lockwood on Sunday. Lockwood looked sharp in relief of Horak with 3.0-plus inning of work.
UC Riverside's damage was limited to the seventh inning as three consecutive singles loaded the bases with one out. Lockwood induced a potential inning ending double play but Fernandez beat the wild throw, allowing two runners to score.
Seniors Cole Doherty and Billy Sahlinger combined to pitch a clean ninth with Sahlinger picking up his fifth save of the season.
Richard Delgado (0-2) threw 4.2 innings on Saturday, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits. Jacob Worrell pitched a scoreless 3.1 innings to finish the game for UC Riverside.
