PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Pilots recorded a season-high 15 hits, but the Pacific Tigers took advantage of six Portland errors to prevail 10-6 in a West Coast Conference baseball game played on Saturday night at Joe Etzel Field. Only five of Pacific's runs were earned, and the Pilots had four batters register three hits each on the night.
Â
Pacific (14-18, 6-8 WCC) scored the game's first run in the top of the third, but the Pilots (13-21, 1-10 WCC) immediately responded in bottom half of the inning. Michael Forgione led off with a single, advanced to second on an error and moved to third on a Geoffrey Lee sacrifice bunt. Forgione then trotted home on sacrifice fly by Ryan Barr to even the score.
Â
The Tigers then jumped ahead with a tally in the next inning, but again the Pilots had an answer. This time with the bases loaded, Barr stepped up to the plate and sent a two-run single to center field. Brian Pozos and Kevin Farley both scored on the hit, handing Portland a 3-2 lead.
Â
The lead was short-lived, however, as Pacific scored four in the top of the fifth inning. Blake Barry led off the inning with a solo home run, and Gio Brusa followed with a two-run shot. The Tigers then scored one more before the end of the inning, and would go on to add two more runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take control of the game.
Â
The Pilots did get one back in the bottom of the seventh when Brady Kerr singled home Hummel, who had previously tripled with a deep shot to center field that bounced off the wall. Portland plated two more in the bottom of the ninth after Kerr followed a one-out walk to Hummel with a single to right field. Grant Sutton then reached on an infield single to load the bases.
Â
Next up was Farley, who picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice before Eric Sapp drilled the first pitch he saw to right, which scored another run to pull the Pilots within four. But Pacific reliever Bryce Lombardi settled down from there to record the final out of the game.
Â
Lombardi tossed 4.0 innings of relief to notch his second save of the year. The win goes to Fineas Delbontasmith (3-2), who came in for starter Ricky Reynoso after he went 3.0 innings.
Â
Portland starter Davis Tominaga (2-7) takes the loss, while Jackson Lockwood worked 4.0 innings out of the bullpen.
Â
Forgione was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Hummel went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Farley drove in one and scored one, while going 3-for-5, and Kerr was also 3-for-5 with an RBI. Barr had three RBI's.
Â
The Pilots defense turned a pair of double plays on the night, and Pacific committed two miscues.
Â
The series finale is set for tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
