PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Pacific Tigers broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the 10th inning before holding on for a 3-2 win over the Portland Pilots to conclude a three-game West Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots did get runner on with a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th, but reliever Justin Giovannoni was able record the final out to notch the save.
Â
The Pilots (13-22, 1-11 WCC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after Grant Sutton led off with a double to deep right-center field. Kevin Farley then moved him over with a sacrifice bunt, and Michael Forgione brought him home with a perfectly placed bunt.
Â
The bottom of the fourth followed a similar script for the Pilots, but this time it was Cooper Hummel with the lead-off double. Eric Sapp provided the sacrifice bunt, and Brady Kerr made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single up the middle.
Â
The Tigers (15-18, 7-8 WCC) responded in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run homer from Danny Mayer. Kevin Sandri began the frame by reaching on an error, and Mayer tied the game with a shot over the left field fence.
Â
The game would remain 2-2 until the top of the 10th. The Pilots did load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Pacific's Vince Arogio induced a ground out off the bat of Sapp to end the threat.
Â
In the 10th, the Tigers got runners on first and second with one out. Portland's Kevin Baker then recorded a big strikeout, but Jimmy Boras came through with the two-out, game-winning hit up the middle that scored Gio Brusa from second base.
Â
Baker (0-3) takes the loss, despite throwing 5.0 solid innings out of the bullpen. He yielded three hits, while striking out five. Starter Jordan Wilcox also threw 5.0 innings and also surrendered just three hits. He K'd three and allowed the homer to Mayer.
Â
Jordan Gonzalez (1-0) takes his first win of the year after working 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Pacific used five pitchers on the day, and starter Jake Jenkins allowed both of Portland's runs.
Â
The Pilots out-hit the Tigers for the second straight day, this time by an 8-6 margin. Jason Rosen had two of Portland's eight hits.
