MALIBU, Calif. --- Portland pitchers Davis Tominaga and Jackson Lockwood combined to allow only three hits, Ryan Barr and Cooper Hummel each had multiple hits and an RBI, and the Pilots scored early and late to claim a 3-2 win over the Pepperdine Waves at Eddy D. Field on Saturday afternoon. The win evens the three-game West Coast Conference series, with the finale set for tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Â
The Pilots (15-23, 2-12 WCC) jumped on the board early, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Jason Rosen and Barr both singled, giving Portland runners on first and second. Hummel then drove a double to deep left field, easily allowing Rosen to score to make it a 1-0 game. Barr also tried to come all the way around to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.
Â
Michael Forgione then sparked a Portland run in the top of the third inning after getting hit by a pitch with two outs. Forgione then stole second, moved to third on an error and trotted home on a Barr single, his second of the game.
Â
Portland's 2-0 lead was short-lived however as the Waves (19-18, 9-8 WCC) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Matt Gelalich knocked in a run with a double, and Matthew Kanfer tied the game with an RBI on a fielder's choice.
Â
But that's all the offense Pepperdine could produce against Tominaga (3-7), who cruised through 6.1 innings. He allowed just the two runs on three hits, before giving way to Lockwood with a runner on and one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Meanwhile the Pilots gave their pitcher the lead with a run in the top of the seventh. This time it was a Pepperdine throwing error that allowed Grant Taylor to score the go-ahead run. Taylor had singled with one out, and Forgione was trying to move him to second with a sacrifice bunt when the error occurred. Forgione was then left stranded at third.
Â
Lockwood continued where Tominaga left off, earning his first career save without allowing a hit. The right-hander stranded a Pepperdine runner at third base in the eighth before retiring the Waves in order in the ninth to put the win on ice.
Â
Pepperdine used four pitchers on the day, with the loss going to reliever Max Gamboa (1-6).
Â
Portland out-hit the Waves 10-3, Barr finished with three hits, and Hummel added two. Taylor also had two hits and scored a run.
Â
Tomorrow the Pilots will be going after the first series win at Pepperdine since 2010.
