MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track & field teams were at the John Knight Twilight on Friday night. Kaylie Van Loo took first again in the javelin and Joseph Horen opened up in the 5,000m taking the top spot.
Van Loo continued her successful season with another first place finish in the javelin with a throw of 152".
Maria Montt won the 100m sprint with her time of 12.46; a time that ties her for the third fastest time in the event in program history. Also in the 100m, Madeleine Hutson took 14
th with a time of 13.26 and Skye Chen-Johnson's time of 13.59 set her in 16
th.
Mariela Martinez and Hannah Souders took 10
th and 11
th in the 400m with their times of 1:02.58 and 1:03.07, respectively. Andrea Theriau finished her 800m race in a time of 2:17.79 taking 6
th place.
Souders and Hutson also competed in the 200m finishing with times of 27.15 and 27.19 to place 11
th and 12
th, respectively.
Christina Francisco won her heat and placed 2
nd overall in the 400m hurdle coming in just .41 behind the first place runner with a time of 1:04.77. Fellow Pilot Dani Castillo finished in 7
th with her time of 1:07.07.
"Christina had a great race," said assistant coach Chad Colwell. "The 400 hurdles is a very tough race and she ran very aggressive in her first race."
In the longer distances, Lindsay Tompkins took 6
th in the 1,500m with her time of 4:52.36 and Emily Peterson completed the 3,000m steeple chase in 11:19.70 nabbing 2
nd place.
On the men's side, Jack Welch took 4
th overall in the 400m completing the lap in 49.74.
Cobie Chavez-Killinger opened the season up with a time of 1:53.57 in the 800m taking 6
th place and Said Guermali was one spot behind him with a time of 1:56.35.
Both the 1,500m and the 5,000m featured a few Pilots. Andy Holstrom led the way for Portland with a 7
th place finish and time of 4:02.03, followed by Sam Lomex (8
th, 4:02.37) and Alex Bowns (9
th, 4:05.66).
Horen won the 5,000m with a time of 15:12.78 with Fabian Tomas on his heel taking 2
nd with a time of 15:13.81.
The Pilots have a busy week ahead of them with six meets on the schedule. First up will be the Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Pacific Coast meets on Thursday, April 14. Then the Bryan Clay Invite on Friday, April 15 and the Oregon Relays, Pacific Open, and Beach Invite on Saturday, April 16.
