PORTLAND, Ore. --- The San Francisco Dons claimed the three-game West Coast Conference series by topping the Portland Pilots 10-3 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots and Dons split their previous two meetings.
Â
The Dons (19-30, 13-11 WCC) scored the game's first runs with a two-run top of the second inning. USF then scored a run during the third and fourth innings before scoring two more in the fifth to take control of the scoreboard. Brady Bate was responsible for the first run in the second with an RBI double. The run in the third came on a sacrifice fly, and Bate added a solo home run in the fourth to make it a 4-1 game.
Â
The Pilots' (16-29, 3-17 WCC) first run came in the bottom of the second, and at the time it cut their deficit in half. Cooper Hummel benefited on a pair of errors to reach second base, and Ryan Barr moved him to third with a single. Kevin Farley then picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to pull the Pilots within 2-1.
Â
Ross Puskarich and Dan James had USF's RBI's in the fifth inning to push the lead to 6-1, and the Dons scored three more in the seventh and another in the eighth en route to the win.
Â
The Pilots scored two in the eighth, courtesy a two-run single by Hummel.
Â
San Francisco's James Kannenberg (6-4) was nearly unhittable in 7.0 innings of work. He allowed just two hits, fanned four and registers his sixth win on the year. The two runs in the eighth were charged to reliever Joey Steele, who also allowed three hits.
Â
Portland starter Jordan Wilcox (4-3), who was one of seven pitchers used by the Pilots, takes the loss.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a trip to Keizer, Ore., to face the Oregon State Beavers on Tuesday. First pitch at Volcanoes Stadium is set for 5:35 p.m.
