PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore forward Jackson Jellah scored his second and third goals of the weekend as the Portland Pilots gave head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt his first career win with a 2-1 win over DePaul on Sunday before an announced crowd of 1,014 at Merlo Field. The goals from Jellah came in the 32nd and 66th minute, ending the game with a 2-1 win.
Jellah, who scored Portland's lone goal on Friday night, came off the bench in the 28th minute and put his stamp on the game four minutes later. Freshman Rey Ortiz created the scoring chance with a deep run into DePaul's penalty box. He slotted a pass to Jellah on the right side and he struck a crushing ball top shelf for a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Demons (0-1-1) responded with the equalizer just before halftime. The Pilots blocked several shots from the DePaul attack during the sequence, but were unable to fully clear the ball out of the 18 yard box. Jack Scheper attacked down the left side to send in a well-hit low shot towards Pilot goalkeeper Paul Christensen, who recorded the save. Michael Mojarro, however, sat free on the right side of the six-yard box and drove the rebound into the right corner of the goal.
Jellah recorded the game-winner midway through the second half with a back-heal tap in after a nice run down the left side by junior Brandon Zambrano. After springing free, Zambrano cut a low ball back towards the penalty spot to freshman Benji Michel. Michel then flicked the ball to Jellah who calmly finished just inside the right post.
The game was physical and resulted in seven total cautions, all in the second half, including a red card to DePaul's Simon Megally in the 80th minute. DePaul outshot the Pilots 11-10 overall, but Portland had a 7-2 margin in the second half. The Pilots also gained a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
The first half had an uneven flow as both teams struggled to maintain clear possession and control of the game. The Pilots then began to slow the game down, surging to get crosses into the attacking third and holding possession to recover and reassess their attack. Michel had several dangerous runs in the penalty area as Portland seemed to wrestle control of the match, until the lapse just before the break.
Portland senior Eddie Sanchez nearly notched his first goal of the season in the 74th minute as his shot from the left side of the box was pushed wide by Blue Demons keeper Quentin Low.
Christensen recorded four saves in the match, all in the first half, while Low stopped two shots for the Blue Demons.
Next weekend the Pilots will host the Nike Portland Invitational, playing No. 18 Ohio State on Friday and then San Jose State on Sunday. Friday's game will be televised on CSN-NW with kick off at 7 p.m. Sunday's game will not have TV coverage, but will be streamed live on TheW.tv at 2 p.m.
