PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland struggled early and dropped a 74-33 decision to No. 21 Saint Mary's Thursday night in West Coast Conference men's basketball play at the Chiles Center.
A winter storm in Portland caused havoc with nearly 12 inches of snow and ice throughout the city mid-week. The attendance was impacted as just 1,745 fans came out, more than 1,000 below the team's season average.
It was the second straight game impacted by winter weather as Portland's game scheduled for Jan. 7 against Gonzaga was postponed. That game has been re-scheduled for Monday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m.
The Pilots (9-7, 2-2 WCC) went cold inside the arena as well, finishing with a season-low 33 points and shooting 25 percent from the field.
The Gaels (15-1, 5-0 WCC) were led by Lake Oswego, Ore. native Calvin Hermanson with 27 points in his homecoming. He was the only Gael in double figures, but nine different Saint Mary's players scored.
Sophomore guard Jazz Johnson scored a team-high 13 points for the Pilots and has now reached double figures in all 16 games this season.
Senior point guard Alec Wintering entered the game as the WCC's leader in scoring and assists, but was held to four points and three assists on the night. Wintering did match a career-high with six steals in the game. Freshman center Joseph Smoyer also blocked a season high four shots off the bench.
Portland struggled offensively early, scoring just nine points on 4-of-21 shooting in the first half. The Pilots also had seven turnovers and missed 5-of-6 free throws as they trailed 37-9 at halftime.
The margin continued to grow after intermission as the Gaels dominated in most statistical categories. Saint Mary's gained a 50-16 rebounding advantage, made 12-of-30 three-pointers and gained a 16-5 margin in points off of turnovers.
The Pilots will look to rebound on Saturday when the Loyola Marymount Lions visit the Chiles Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game will be televised live on ROOT Sports Northwest. Tickets for Portland men's basketball games are available by visiting
