SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland senior Paul Christensen was voted the West Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight season, and he joins sophomores Benji Michel and Rey Ortiz on the All-WCC First Team, it was announced on Tuesday. Senior Kris Reaves nabbed All-WCC Second Team honors, seniors Matthew Coffey and Erik Edwardson earned honorable mention, and Spencer Myers landed on the league's all-freshman team.
Â
Christensen, who originally hails from Woodinville, Wash., led the WCC in shutouts for the second consecutive year, producing six clean sheets overall. His three shutouts against league opponents were also tops in the conference, as was his 1.11 goals against average. A four-year starter, Christensen ends his career No. 5 all-time in program history in both shutouts (20) and saves (283). He also earned All-WCC Second Team accolades as a junior.
Â
Michel, a forward out of Orlando, Fla., was among the nation's leaders in goals for most of the season. He ended the year with a conference-best 10 goals, and he added two assists for a total of 22 points, which was second in the WCC to Ortiz's 25 points. Michel notched a hat trick during a win over Fairfield to become the first player to accomplish that feat on Merlo Field since 2003, and he earned WCC Player of the Week honors twice. This is the second year in a row to land on the All-WCC First Team for Michel, who was also named the league's freshman of the year last fall.
Â
Ortiz ranks second nationally in assists per game (0.76) and he's third in total assists with 13. A native of Acapulco, Mexico, Ortiz missed matching the program's single-season assist record by one. He also scored six goals, which ranks third in the conference, to give him a league-high 25 points, and he was named the WCC's Player of the Week twice this season. He tallied two game-winners, which tied Michel for the team-high, and he handed out three assists against Fairfield to become the first Pilot with three assists in a game since 2007.
Â
Reaves, who's a defender out of Duluth, Ga., anchored a backline that recorded a league-best six shutouts on the year. During the WCC slate, the Pilots allowed only 1.14 goals per game, which also led the conference. Reaves was an All-WCC First Team selection a year ago, while also landing on the NSCAA All-Far West Region Third Team.
Â
Coffey, who hails from Sandy, Utah, totaled four goals and two assists. Coffey earned all-league honorable mention last season as well , and in 2013 he nabbed all-conference second-team honors, while also landing on the all-freshman team. Edwardson calls Vancouver, B.C., home, and he tied for second on the team with four assists this fall. He also collected three goals and a game-winner, and he landed All-WCC Honorable Mention recognition in 2014.
Â
Myers was part of that backline that recorded six shutouts. The native of Liverpool, England, started 12 matches at left back, and he finished his first year on The Bluff with two assists.
Â
Regular season champion San Francisco saw senior midfielder Leon Schwarzer earn WCC Player of the Year honors, while head coach Eddie Soto was picked as the WCC Coach of the Year. Pacific's Tristan Blackmon was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year, and San Diego's Aaron Frey was picked as the WCC Freshman of the Year.
Â
All five individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's eight head coaches.Â
