LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Portland redshirt junior Taryn Rawlings unofficially finished 51st individually at the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted at a wet and windy Tom Sawyer State Park on Saturday morning. Rawlings covered the 6k course in a time of 20:20.91 and had a strong finish as she passed 34 runners in the final 1,000 kilometers.
A native of Wilsonville, Ore., Rawlings earned her place individually at nationals by placing 14th at the NCAA West Regional.
This is the second NCAA Championships appearance in as many years for Rawlings after competing with the Pilots team at last year's meet. She placed 147th in 2016, helping the Pilots to their first team appearance at NCAA's and a 22nd place team finish.
Rawlings posted the sixth-best individual showing at nationals in Portland women's cross country history.
The No. 4-ranked Portland men's team, winners of the NCAA West Regional, will now take on the course and look for the second podium finish in program history. The men's race begins at 7 a.m. (PT). The Pilots are making their 18th overall NCAA team appearance and had a program-best third-place showing in 2014.
Threatening lightning and thunderstorms in Louisville forced the championship meet to be pushed up by 90 minutes.
