PORTLAND, Ore. – Two Portland women's tennis players were unavailable on Saturday and the Idaho Vandals took advantage with a 4-3 victory at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots (1-4) were forced to forfeit at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to player absences.
Sophomore Radina Dimitrova missed the match due to injury, while senior Kara Okazaki was also unavailable leaving the Pilots with just five active players.
Despite the obstacles, Portland was able to challenge the Vandals (1-1) to the very end.
After losing the doubles point and falling behind 2-0 after dropping the No. 1 singles point, the Pilots evened the score with three-set wins from senior Jelena Lazarevic and sophomore Tatiana Grigoryan at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
Portland freshman Emily Soares overcame a tough tiebreak loss in the first set at No. 4 singles to take a 4-1 lead over Ana Batiri in the second set before Batiri retired due to injury.
Idaho clinched the match at No. 5 singles, where Maria Tavares earned a straight sets victory.
Portland will hit the road next week and visit the Boise State Broncos on Friday for a noon start.
