BERKELEY, Calif. – Alaia Rubio Perez and Dariya Radulova reached the Round of 16 in singles, while Rubio Perez and Maria Galatescu teamed up for a run to the Round of 16 in doubles to highlight a strong Portland effort at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
Rubio Perez picked up straight set wins over Washingtons' Jermine Sherif and Sofia Daryaie of Saint Mary's before falling to the No. 1 seed from host Cal, Mao Mushika on Sunday. Radulova outlasted Palina Saulevich of Sacramento State 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 before handling Washington's Carina Syrtveit 6-3, 6-0. Radulova was also knocked out by a Cal player as No. 8 seed Berta Passola Folch advanced in their Round of 16 meeting.
Rubio Perez and Galatescu beat a team from UC Davis and then upset a seeded team from Washington State in the doubles draw. They went up 3-0 against the nationally-ranked tandem of Valerie Glozman and Monika Ekstrand of Stanford before falling by an 8-5 margin.
Eight Pilots competed in the event and went a combined 9-9 in singles and 4-5 in doubles. Junior Nadine Arbaizar Martinez won a pair of singles qualifying matches on Friday to reach the main draw.
The ITA Northwest Regional Championships is a qualifying tournament for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from each of the 13 regions will qualify for the corresponding NCAA individual championship. The Northwest regional featured players from 17 teams – Cal, UC Davis, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, Stanford, Washington and Washington State.
"We had one of our best Regional Tournaments in singles in my time with the program," Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic said. "It was the first time ever that we had two players in the Round of 16 and we had five singles players finish with winning records at this event. I could not be prouder of this group and their commitment to making a difference this year.
"Alaia Rubio Perez was incredibly impressive with her win over Sherif and then followed it up with a gutsy performance against the best player in the tournament, who is ranked No. 17 in the nation. All the work she has put in over the summer is showing up and I am excited to continue to see her progress.
Dariya Radulova had a breakout match against Syrtveit, a player who we struggled against for years when playing Washington. It was Dariya's best match as a Pilot and a nice foreshadowing of things to come from her.
"Lexie Flores, Meagan Pearson and Maria Galatescu continue to play really well and have taken great strides forward this year. I'm very happy to see them settling into college tennis and playing with so much confidence.
"Alaia and Maria had a nice run in doubles and dropped a tough one against Stanford. However, playing against the best player in the country, Valeria Glozman, was such a valuable experience for us and we are going to keep getting better as the year progresses.
"Overall, this was an incredibly valuable experience for our group and I am extremely proud of all the improvements we are showing this fall."
Portland is set to conclude the fall season at the Gonzaga Invitational hosted Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash.
