SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- The Pilots were stellar on the mound and received some timely hitting as Portland overcame the San Francisco Dons 4-1 on Saturday afternoon to conclude a three-game West Coast Conference series at Benedetti Diamond. Portland's Kevin Baker had another quality start on the mound, while Matt Kelly, Devin Kopas, and Tate Budnick each had two hits.
Â
Baker (3-4) earns his third win of the year after limiting the Dons (18-18, 5-10 WCC) to just five hits in 5.0 innings. The bullpen took over where Baker began, and relievers Jordan Horak and Marty Luckenbach were nearly flawless during the final 4.0 innings.
Â
Meanwhile the Pilots (8-27-1, 4-11 WCC) produced enough offense to claim the win. Tied 1-1 in the top of the third inning, the Pilots plated three to surge ahead. With one out in the third, Kelly and Ryan Hoogerwerf both doubled, giving the visitors runners on second and third. Kopas then provided the go-ahead RBI with a single to left field.
Â
The Pilots then added some insurance as Kevin Wade drove in a run with an RBI single, and Cody Hawken drew a bases loaded walk to hand Portland a three-run cushion.
Â
And it proved to be more than enough as Horak held onto the lead for 2.1 innings and Luckenbach collects his fourth save of the year. Luckenbach escaped a bases loaded jam in the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth to seal the win.
Â
San Francisco used four pitchers on the day, with the loss going to Daniel Slominski (2-4). He was charged with all four Portland runs on six hits in 2.2 innings.
Â
Budnick gave Portland a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when he went yard with a solo home run. The solo blast was his first as a Pilot. USF matched the run in the home half of the frame when they scored on a fielder's choice.
Â
The Pilots now return to The Bluff to host the Oregon Ducks for a non-conference contest on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
