CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Portland men's tennis team will look to continue its remarkable 2017 season with another program first: winning the West Coast Conference Championships and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
The Pilots (18-2, 8-1 WCC) claimed the
WCC regular season title last weekend and are the No. 1 seed in this week's conference tournament which will be held Thursday-Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. Portland earned a bye to Friday's semifinals and will face the winner of San Diego versus Santa Clara at 2 p.m.
Live scoring and video of all tournament matches will be available, while fans can visit the
WCC Tournament Central page for further information.
Head coach Aaron Gross was named the
WCC Coach of the Year earlier this week as Portland is ranked No. 46 nationally in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings. The Pilots have never reached the WCC Tournament finals, but have accomplished many firsts already this season.
In addition to taking the WCC regular season title, the Pilots beat San Diego for the first time and junior Michail Pervolarakis became the first Pilot to win WCC Player of the Year honors.
Pervolarakis headlines a roster that has featured four juniors and two sophomores for much of the season. The Limassol, Cyprus native posted a 17-2 overall dual singles record and 7-1 mark against WCC opponents at the No. 1 singles position.
Junior Mathieu Garcia earned All-WCC Second Team honors after recording a 16-3 record at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Fellow juniors Pierre Garcia (10-9) and Alex Wallace (8-5) have been solid at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively.
The bottom of Portland's lineup has been the strongest throughout the league. Sophomore Carlos Donat earned honorable mention singles honors after an impressive dual season with a 14-2 record, including 8-0 mark against WCC opponents. Sophomore Felix Fan finished 14-1 overall and 5-0 against league competition.
The Pilots arrived at the competition site in Claremont, Calif. for practice on Wednesday and will take part in collaborative youth clinic on Thursday afternoon before taking the courts for practice later in the evening.
