LARAMIE, Wyo. --- The Portland Pilots dominated their first match of the 2017 season topping Abilene Christian 3-0 on the opening day of the Rumble Rockies Tournament at the UniWyo Sports Complex. Portland surged through the three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-15.
The two teams started off the first set battling for points, before Portland senior Hannah Troutman and freshman Liz Reich would combine for kills to take the initial lead at 13-11. Katelyn Muller and Jacey Smith would then each register kills for Abilene Christian to tie the score 15-15. Portland answered with a three-point run headed by back-to-back kills from junior Reghan Pukis to extend the lead to 19-16. The Wildcats then attempted a comeback, but the Pilots continued to pull away with a final kill and an ace from sophomore Katie Barker, and a kill by Reich to take the set 25-21.
Abilene Christian began the second set with a five-point run to lead 6-3. Portland then answered with a four-point run of their own with another ace and kill from Barker and a kill from Troutman to take a 7-6 lead. The Wildcats fought back to even the match at 9-9, but Reich and Pukis continued the team's momentum to pull away. Senior Sarah Savoca added a kill and ace of her own to put the Pilots ahead 18-14. Moments later Troutman recorded the final kill to end the second set 25-18.
The Pilots opened up the final set with a 4-point run as Pukis continued to add to her already 11 kills of the match. ACU attempted to gain momentum for a comeback to bring the set to 9-8 in favor of the Pilots, but Portland erupted with two separate runs of their own to extend the lead to 16-9. The Pilots continued to drive through the remainder of the third set, ending with a four-point run to end it 25-15 and claim the match 3-0.
Pukis and Troutman both led the team in kills with 16 and 11, respectively and freshman Cali Thompson registered 37 assists.
The Pilots return to the court tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific) to face South Dakota, and again at 6:00 p.m. to battle tournament host Wyoming.
