SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track and field teams competed in four events to open the first day of the UW Invite in the Dempsey Indoor Center on Friday evening. The women competed in the 200, distance medley, and 5000m, while the men only had one group of Pilots which ran in the distance medley.

Sophomores Maya Murphy-Cook and Michal Jones led the way for the sprint group, finishing first (26.52) and second (27.33) in their heat. Junior Christina Francisco also competed in the 200m in a separate heat, crossing the finish line in 28:01.

The Pilots then had both a women's and men's team run in the distance medley. The women's group made up of sophomores Emily Bechen and Maddy Lyons, along with juniors Emily Peterson and Dylan Hite finished the race in 12:29.32. Juniors Trent Mazelli and Jack Welch, as well freshman Jake Knoblich and senior Conor Johnston then ran for the men, posting a time of 10:28.60.

In the final race of the night for the Pilots, junior Sophia Noto led the women in the 5000m with a time of  17:49.01. Sophomore Stella Gillian was next to cross the line for Portland in 18:16.54 , followed by Freshman Grace Perkins who finished in 18:27.07.

The Pilots will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9:00 to start the second day of the UW Invite.
